A Nugget from Hattie
“Collective teacher efficacy is greater than three times more powerful and predictive of student achievement than socioeconomic status. It is more than double the effect of prior achievement and more than triple the effect of home environment and parental involvement. It is also greater than three times more predictive of student achievement than student motivation and concentration, persistence, and engagement.”
Think about the power behind this idea and what we do with things like PLCs, teacher meetings, and faculty meetings. Are we spending that time together building collective efficacy?
Collective Teacher Efficacy Has An Effect Size Of 1.57
Collective Teacher Efficacy is the collective belief of teachers in their ability to positively affect students. With an effect size of d=1.57 Collective Teacher Efficacy is strongly correlated with student achievement. Here is a quick overview of John Hattie’s “new number one” influence.
Conversely, if educators' perceptions are filtered through the belief that there is very little they can do to influence student achievement, negative beliefs pervade the school culture. When educators lack a sense of collective efficacy, they do not pursue certain courses of action because they feel they or their students lack the capabilities to achieve positive outcomes. The culture reflects a solemn satisfaction with the status quo. School communities experience an inclination to stop trying, decreased expectations, and lower levels of performance (Tschannen-Moran & Barr, 2004). In addition, when collective teacher efficacy is lacking, educators are more likely to ascribe failure to students' lack of ability, seek exclusion for challenging students (Gibbs & Powell, 2011), and experience higher levels of stress (Klassen, 2010; Lim & Eo, 2014). Conversations are often reflective of external blame, or an "us" versus "them" mentality.
Shout outs!!
A special shout-out to Kelly and Sarah for all of their time and energy getting our year started off so smoothly. They make all of the moving parts in their day look easy to manage.
Have a shout out for one or more of your teammates??? Send it my way and I would be happy to share it in a future newsletter.
Read Aloud
I will plan to do a read aloud three times this year (Aug/Sept., Jan./Feb, and April/May).
My first book will be "Going Places," by Peter and Paul Reynolds.
Looking forward to it!
ILEARN results have arrived
The following are our ILEARN results from the spring of 2019. From what I know about the people in this building is, we will take this data, do our best to learn what we can from it and then apply that to our everyday interactions with our students. This is the collective efficacy referenced above.....knowing we CAN make a difference with student growth.
Individual student reports are being printed and copied for you. We will send these reports home on August 30th. I would like to send the NWEA student reports home at the same time. Those will be printed for you.
As I learn more about the ILEARN reports and how we can disaggregate the data I will be sure to share with you.
The state averages are:
ELA:
3rd: 46%
4th: 45%
Math:
3rd: 58%
4th: 53%
**At this time, these passing rates are embargoed and should not be shared publicly. I wanted you to have the results first before we read about it in the paper.
NWEA
We will run student progress reports for you. If you have any "stragglers" after today, please plan on running their individual student progress reports.
