April 2023
A Message From Mr. Blake
Well, hello April! I am not sure where you came from, but we sure are glad to see you! The days are getting longer, the temperatures are slowly rising, and students and staff alike are working hard learning together. Students have done so well these last few weeks through what has been a long period from February to April vacation. While the gears are furiously turning and much is being accomplished, I can certainly see that folks will be ready for vacation in a few short weeks.
After vacation, the remaining weeks of school will surely fly by. Before we know it, summer will be here and we will be able to spend time soaking up the warm rays of summer we all are longing for. Until then, let's buckle-down and end the year with a bang. There is still much left to do at school including a great deal of teaching and learning. We will begin end of year assessments starting in mid-May. This information will be shared with families in the end of year report cards.
Finally, it is important to note the important dates to remember in our newsletters from here on out. We will be communicating the many dates and events that happen towards the end of the school year. Additionally, please be on the lookout for communications via Seesaw. Teachers will be utilizing the platform to communicate the events and activities that occur at the classroom level.
As always, if there is anything we can do in these final weeks to support your family, please be sure to reach out. We are happy to help in any way we can!
Be well,
Mr. Blake

Field day T-shirts are available for purchase for you and your child. This is a great way to reinforce
community and school pride. It is our goal that every student receives a shirt! If you would like to donate money towards a shirt, please indicate that on your order form. Thank you very much!
If you are interested in purchasing a T-shirt, please make checks payable to Russell Elementary.
These orders are due April 12, unfortunately there can be no exceptions. If I receive orders after April 12, I will be sending them back home with your child.

Pick-Up & Drop-Off Procedure Reminder
Recently, we almost had two head-on collisions between families trying to exit through the one-way driveway connecting the Superintendent's Office and Russell School.
Please be reminded that if you are picking up or dropping off students through the parent pick-up loop, you must exit through the bus loop in the morning and the afternoon. I understand that this may cause delays while we load/unload buses, but it is necessary for safety. We do our best to load and unload buses as quickly as we possibly can.
I thank you in advance for slowing down and prioritizing the safety of our students and our staff.
School Counselor's Corner
Another month has come and gone and so much learning has been done! March was a very busy month for social-emotional learning. We spent a lot of time focusing on safety rules and ways to stay safe. We started off by reading How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe? or Officer Buckle and Gloria, where we discussed various topics from jumping on the bed, cleaning up spills, and even when (or when NOT) to call 9-1-1.
Next, we covered “Never Never” rules and the 3 R’s to staying safe: “recognize, refuse, and report.” As outlined by our SEL curriculum, Second Step, the 8 Never Never rules we covered included never touch guns; never play with fire; never ride on wheels without wearing a helmet; never go in water without an older person watching; never use a sharp tool without an older person’s help; never touch a dog without asking the person in charge; never cross the street without checking all ways for traffic; and never ride in a car without wearing a seatbelt.
Teaching the "Never Never" rules to each class generated a lot of discussion around how different families choose to handle these safety issues at home, from students sharing “I've used a gun to hunt” to “I’m allowed to ride my scooter without a helmet but not my bike.” While honoring individual family values and rules, I tried to stress the importance of being safe and understanding why these “rules” exist.
In particular, the rule around never touching guns created a lot of chatter not only in classrooms but also on the playground, in the cafeteria, and the hallways of our school. After these Second Step lessons, we observed a significant increase in students talking about guns and gun use. As I’m sure you are all well aware, this type of talk is not appropriate for the school setting.
Please understand that the import of these lessons was to teach students that if they are shown or offered a gun or a lighter by a peer, or a friend invites them over to swim in their pool while their parents are out, they are able to recognize whether or not it is safe, say no, and tell a trusted adult. My goal in teaching SEL lessons is always to inform students and give them the tools and skills they need to make good decisions on their own. I hope that these "Never Never" rules and our class discussions around ways to stay safe served as good conversation starters at home for you and your family.
April is a month to focus on honesty and integrity. These character traits are essential to raising strong, brave, independent, and compassionate citizens. After reading about honesty and discussing what it means to be trustworthy, we will move onto digital citizenship, including a lesson on cybersafety. When we return from April vacation, we will move into a Focusing on the Future unit, where we will learn about community helpers and explore various career and professional opportunities.
I’m so excited to be on this journey with your children! Thank you for your partnership and, as always, please reach out to me anytime with questions, comments, or concerns.
Happy Spring!

Emergency Preparedness Drills
At Russell School we feel the safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority. We work diligently to provide a safe learning environment for everyone, everyday.
In order to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans regularly. Throughout the year we conduct a number of these “drills”; each time monitoring student and staff response to ensure efficient and effective implementation of our procedures.
Though we practice many procedures at Russell School, three rise to the top by way of importance; “EVACUATION”, “LOCKOUT” and “LOCKDOWN”.
EVACUATION DRILLS
Russell School conducts several “evacuations” each school year. Typically, evacuations are signaled by the ringing of the fire alarm or an announcement made over the intercom system. Ultimately, the intent of an evacuation drill is for students and staff to effectively execute the procedures associated with evacuating the building in a safe and orderly manner. Our hope is for each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded.
LOCKOUT DRILLS
Russell School conducts several “Lockout Drills” over the course of the school year. This type of drill will secure the school and safely keep students, staff, and visitors inside the classrooms within our building. Initiated by an announcement over the intercom system, the intent of this drill is to keep the students and staff safe from a number of incidents that could be occurring inside or outside of the building. Examples could include a sick child in the hallway or provide a clear path should we have a need to move first responders through the building to assist a student or staff, etc. This procedure enables school staff to keep everyone safe and provide privacy to our students and staff if need be.
LOCKDOWN DRILLS
Russell School will also conduct “Lockdown Drills” over the course of the school year. This type of drill will secure the school and safely shelter all students, staff, and visitors inside the building. Also initiated by an announcement over the intercom, the intent of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger inside or outside the building.
To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the building until any drill is complete. During a drill, signage will be placed on the doors to the main entrance to notify the public that a drill is in process. Additionally, when a lockdown drill is done you can expect to hear from me via email. This is to ensure transparency and keep families in the loop.
Please remember that these safety drills are done to help maintain our schools as a safe place to learn and work. If you have any questions regarding safety drills or other safety concerns, please feel free to reach out.
1st Graders Celebrate Read Across America Day
As you may know, Thursday, March 2nd was Read Across America Day. This day allowed students and staff to share their common love for storybook characters, authors and reading in general. Leading up to this day, first graders learned all about one of the most well known children's book authors, Dr. Seuss. Students learned how Dr. Suess used rhyming to bring his unique characters to life. They laughed at his silly use of made up words and worked to create some of their own Suess-like characters and rhymes.
The first grade celebrated their love of Dr. Seuss with the culminating event of a Silly Seuss Character Day, where they were encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. The entire first grade team gathered together to enjoy the story of Ten Apples Up on Top read by the first grade teachers, who were dressed as the characters from the book.
This was a special day for all!
