Family Survey
The Kodiak Island Borough School District is partnering with the Association of Alaska School Boards to conduct the School Climate and Connectedness Survey ©, a statewide survey taken by students, staff, and families. This survey measures their perceptions of each school’s climate including the engagement of students, staff, and families.
You are an important partner as we work to continually improve each school’s environment. Each parent/guardian is asked to complete one survey during February. If you have more than one child attending this school, you only need to fill out one survey. You may access the survey using the survey button below.
Results from this survey will be used to identify student, staff and family perceptions of school climate issues within our school(s). KMS staff use the results to inform their efforts to ensure schools are safe, supportive, and caring places for all students.
Thank you for your support of Kodiak Middle School.

Diversity Club
All students have the option to sign up for a club during recess time. If they don't sign up for a club, they go outside for recess. Some clubs run every-day, some are on certain days. On days where the club does not meet, students will go outside for recess.
We are looking forward to next week's KMS Student Government sponsored Spirit Week. Each day has a different theme and students may dress accordingly.
On Tuesday, students are encouraged to coordinate with their friends or a pal and dress alike. Students may exchange notes or cards with their friends. We will not be coordinating a grade-wide Valentine exchange. Parents are asked to not send special Valentine gifts as our office staff are unable to deliver them during the school day.
Given recent public concerns with the potential for unknown substances in candy, and concerns regarding spreading germs through sharing food and beverages, students are asked to not bring bags of candy or other food and drink items to share.
Weekly Class Updates
This week we have been continuing our close reading of Freak the Mighty. Students have been practicing analyzing what they read and reading aloud with a partner. We will be ending the week with a little creative writing to get them thinking about the characters, and starting next week with another comprehension quiz on chapters 5-9 on Tuesday. Next week we’ll also be starting characterization and digging into plot a little deeper.
This week we began our new unit that will focus on culture. Students have spent the week reading and practicing using Text-Based Evidence to support their answers. They have done some group brainstorming to create a list of cultural traits and define culture. Next week we will continue to explore culture and how it can change and spread.
This week we worked through how climate zones change the seasons in different parts of the world. Students worked through multiple models that show how Earth orbits the sun and has a tilt in its axis, causing a difference in weather in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. We have a test this Friday.
Hello from 6th grade math! We are working on positive and negative numbers for this unit, and we are working on a fun project on elevation. Students are making a number line poster with a partner, showing 4 places they would like to visit and their elevations. 2 must be below sea level and 2 must be above sea level. Ask students where in the world they have decided to (virtually) visit! This will be due on Tuesday. Reminder that homework is due every Friday. Have a great weekend!

Upcoming Health Presentation
On Wednesday, February 15, 6th grade students in Mr. Bechtol's PE class will split up to take part in a Health presentation on puberty as part of the KIBSD Health curriculum. Female students will meet with Mrs. Sheila (6th grade counselor) and KMS Nurse Chloe Nelson, while male students will meet with Mr. Bechtol (6th grade PE teacher) and Mr. Greg Walter (Nurse practitioner from KANA).
This presentation focuses on reproductive body parts and their functions with an emphasis on puberty. Please contact Mrs. Sheila Beardsley with questions.
sbeardsley01@kibsd.org or call 486-7471.
Welcome Mrs. Linscheid February substitute for Mrs. Lhotka
In the coming weeks, students will be working on presenting a 3–5-minute demonstration speech. Students are just beginning to pick their topic and will collect materials and build a presentation tool (posters, Power Point) to assist them in their demonstration. Encourage them to practice at home. Supporting handouts should be in their binders and will be posted on Schoology.
