This Week in Mathematics

This week in mathematics students are learning about expressions and equations. Students are exploring writing expressions to represent real-world mathematical situations. They are also tapping into their prior knowledge about the properties of operations to discover equivalent equations. Students have their new Common Core Ready workbooks, which they will be using for homework. Please make sure your student brings their workbook with them to school everyday, but please also remind them that they do not need to carry their science books back and forth to school!

Science

Students are continuing to explore Waves, the electromagnetic spectrum and renewable and non-renewable energy sources through science labs. This week they started on research for Environmental Energy Debates. Each student received an issue pulled from current events about the environment and our use of energy. Students have been conducting research and will be debating the issue from one of the three following stand points: developer, preservationist, or conservationists. Students have been encouraged to research all angles of the issues in order to be prepared for opposing arguments. So far, students have researched thought-provoking ideas and perspectives. We will be holding the debate this Friday in Science.

Studio Day

Our second Studio Day is upon us. On January 15, block two (Mrs. Fungo`s Homeroom) will be showing what they know to 4-6 grade teachers and administrators from all over the district, including the district office, This is the second installment of this process. I have spent the week outside of school preparing with the district trainer/consultant from the Teachers Development Group to reflect upon and develop lessons aligned with the Common Core State Standards that promote mathematically proficient students. The teachers and administrators in the classroom will be observing the practices we have been implementing this year in action. We are honored and very excited!
