March 10th was National SEL Day
What is SEL? SEL stands for social emotional learning. Social Emotional Learning is βan integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisionsβ (Casel, 2023)
There are five core competencies that encompass SEL: self awareness, self management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills. At the K-5 level, these skills are taught weekly through the Second Step program.
