Weekly Tech Update 12/14 to 12/18

Google Docs Multiple Orientations

Google Docs will now let you change the page orientation within the doc that you are working in. For instance, if you are working on a standard page in Google Docs and need to insert a landscape page, you can now do that. Multiple orientations within one Doc. Especially helpful for tables and images!

Keep Those Chromebooks Up To Date

If you notice a little number pop up in the lower right-hand corner of your Chromebook, it may mean that your Chromebook needs an update. The numbers inside the circle indicate that you have a notification for your Chromebook. Click on the number and see if you have a “Chrome OS” notification as pictured. You should always click on the “Restart to Update” notification to keep your Chromebook updated. This can alleviate several small issues of why your Chromebook may not be performing as expected.

Google Jamboard File Version History

Even though File Version History isn't as easily accessible as it is in other Google Workspace Applications, it's still available. Use the shortcut CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+h to see who has been naughty and who has been nice.

#DitchSummit

Ditch That Textbook author, Matt Miller, has once again gathered some of the brightest minds to provide educators free online PD. Ditch Summit is a 4-week asynchronous summit that is TOTALLY FREE!!! Great to listen on those car rides, while you are working out, on a planning period, etc. Each session usually comes with resources as well. Sign up here to start receiving the links to over 50 presentations in the next 4 weeks. In Matt's words, it's "A 4-week teacher PD party!"

Who Got Caught?

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

EXPLORING, New Age Style

Every year the 7th-grade students in Erik Hauck's Social Studies class, study exploration. This year Erik decided to add a new tool to his toolbox and introduce his students to Story Map Knight Lab. With Story Map Knight Lab, the students can watch a presentation, in this case on Exploration. Students can also create their own Story Maps and customize their journey in their own words adding multimedia, text, etc.

Christmas Fun

My students always looked forward to class in December because they knew I would integrate different holiday puzzles, trivia, games, etc. with them. I wanted to take the old school worksheets and modernize them using different free tech tools. If you are interested in any of these activities, email me and I will be happy to share them with you. All the activities can be found in this book, made with Book Creator... another free tool.

#Remote Learning APP-vent Calendar

In the spirit of the holidays, the Hathaways have published the annual APP-vent calendar. This year they focused on apps that can be utilized in hybrid, remote, and asynchronous settings. Check the calendar each day to learn about a new app and how it can be utilized.

12 Days of Tech-mas

Check out this creation from Sara Hoffman. Sara delivers 12 days of tools, strategies, or activities that you can use in your classroom.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

PDF Candy

Sometimes we need a free pdf tool that can merge, convert, rearrange pages, edit, etc. those pdf files. Yes, Kami will do some of those things, but PDF Candy will do all that and more. If you are having issues with pdf's, you may want to check out PDF Candy.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first month! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged

Jayson St.Croix

Please contact me so we can collaborate on how to integrate more technology into your lessons.
