Principal's Corner
Right now, more than ever our students are under a lot of stress. School, peer pressure, a pandemic, and just life.
Social emotional learning isn’t just something that should be practiced and taught at school. SEL skills are life skills, and of course and must be taught at home as well. Kids and adults require these skills to be successful socially, emotionally, and academically. No matter what level a student’s SEL skills are at, they can always be improved on, as can an adult’s.
The term social-emotional support is an important role parents and families play in the everyday social and emotional needs of their children. Social-emotional learning includes skills like empathy, self-control, and decision-making. Each of these areas includes a number of skills that contribute to the whole child.
The five domains of SEL include:
Self-awareness is having a clear and accurate understanding of ourselves.
Self-management means taking responsibility for our own choices to work towards goals.
Social awareness is having an understanding of the social world.
Relationships are the positive connections we have with others
Decision-making is using strategic methods to make positive choices
All of these skills play a huge role in a child or young adult’s everyday success.
Together, as a team, we as educators and parents, can build stronger, healthier, and more successful learners, by integrating social and emotional skills into our student’s everyday life.
