Week 3 Summer Term Thursday 30th April 2015

SJI International Elementary, Singapore

A Lasallian International School

IPC

This week in IPC, we have learned all about the history of chocolate. We discovered who found chocolate, how they drank it and who brought it to Europe from the New World. The children created timelines to show the history of chocolate from the 14th century till the present day. We also had a special visitor from Uganda who is based in an area where cocoa is farmed. She gave a presentation and talked to the children about cocoa beans and fair trade.

Next week in IPC we will finish our History with our assessment for giving reasons for particular events and changes. We will then move on to Geography, learning where cacao trees grow, what climate is best and what cacao trees look like.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading

The CAFE strategy this week was a fluency strategy; To use punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody (end marks, commas, etc). The children practised reading out loud focusing on their phrasing and fluency with each other.

Writing

In Writing Workshop we celebrated our knowledge of information books by sharing with others. Before sharing, we polished our books as real editors would. Next week we will begin our unit of study on 'Traditional Tales'.

Spelling

This week in spelling, we revisited spelling patterns and sounds that some of us have been spelling incorrectly. Next week the spelling words will be from our fraction vocabulary.

In grammar we broke down the process of writing a paragraph. We used the hamburger as our process to explain our topic sentence, three detail sentences and our concluding sentence. We will continue expanding upon our knowledge to create well formed paragraphs.

MATHS

In Maths this week we began our unit on fractions. The children have learned how to read and write fractions and to compare and order them. They used magnetic pizza pieces and rectangle strips of paper to see the part, whole, equal parts of a fraction. Next week the children will learn how to add and subtract fractions.

FOUNDER'S DAY

Friday 15th May is Founder's Day and school will finish for Prep at 11.20 and for Grade 1 - 6 at 12.20. No lunch will be required.

It is on this day we remember the work done by St John Baptiste de La Salle in educating the children of the poor and establishing a Catholic Brotherhood. As we did last year, Catholic children in the Upper Elementary School will attend a mass with the High School at 8.30am at the Indoor Sports Hall. An assembly will follow mass where all the children in the Middle Years and Upper Elementary School will join the HS. Some of our Grade 2 children will be performing.
