Daylight Savings Time! 🌞

This Sunday March 13th at 2am is the official start of Daylight Savings Time. We'll "spring forward" in preparation for the coming sunny spring days! Be sure to adjust any clocks and check to be sure your phones adjust automatically. Be sure to do this on Sunday so that your children are on time and ready for a brand new week on Monday morning. I hope you enjoy the extra evening sunlight!

Did You Know?

According to timeanddate.com, "although modern DST has only been used for about 100 years, ancient civilizations are known to have engaged in comparable practices thousands of years ago. For example, the Roman water clocks used different scales for different months of the year to adjust the daily schedules to the solar time."

Thank you for your continued support of your children and our school. Together, we will help our children SOAR to reach their greatest potential!

[NEW] 2022-23 School Year Track Changes: Volunteers Needed by March 18th βœ‹

Our team is currently working on track assignments for the 2022-23 School Year. Due to pandemic-related changes as well as other factors, Tracks 1 and 4 have become overcrowded. In order to efficiently and effectively operate a Multi-Track Year Round school, the numbers of students and staff assigned to each track must be as balanced as possible. We are not granting any requests to move to Track 1 or Track 4 at this time.

We are currently asking for volunteer families to move their child(ren) to Track 2 or 3. Track 3 is available K-5th and Track 2 is available K-4th. We expect to be able to add Track 2 5th grade for the 2023-24 school year. Here is the link to 2022-23 Year Round Calendar.

A major benefit of a track change is the opportunity for your children to meet a whole new group of peers! If you would like to volunteer to move to Track 2 or 3, please email our Data Manager, Ms. Edgreen at kedgreen@wcpss.net and Mr. Huber at thuber@wcpss.net as soon as possible but no later than March 18th.

Please note that if there are not enough volunteers, nonvoluntary track changes will be made. Communication about track changes will be sent soon. Thank you!

[UPDATED] WCPSS Volunteer Registration

We welcome parent and community volunteers for a variety of opportunities to include field trip chaperone and lunch and recess duty coverage. In order to volunteer, you are required to be a registered and approved volunteer. Volunteer registration must be completed on a computer at any WCPSS school and should take no more than 10-15 minutes. Please stop by as soon as you are able and we will have a school device available for you to use. Background checks can take up to 8 weeks to be complete so please don't put registration off if you have been waiting. Thank you for your support!

[NEW] Retention Letters

WCPSS Board Policy 3420 requires schools to notify parents if their child is at risk of retention due to not making sufficient or adequate progress toward grade level benchmarks. If you receive a letter it is because your child is not demonstrating proficiency on grade level benchmarks.

We recognize that due to the nature of the pandemic, this year has been incredibly difficult, and these letters may increase stress and anxiety levels for our families and students. That is not the intention, however, we must notify parents of their child’s academic performance. If you receive this letter, it should not be the first time you’re hearing of your child’s struggles. Additionally, if you receive a letter, it does not mean that your child will be retained. There are many factors that go into the decision to retain a student and these factors will be considered by the school retention committee prior to deciding. If you have questions or concerns regarding receipt of the letter, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Please talk with your children about this change and reinforce that it is a personal and private choice whether to wear a mask or not. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach March 7th.

ON-CAMPUS COVID-19 TESTING:

Wake County Public School System, in partnership with MAKO Medical, will begin offering weekly, on-campus COVID-19 testing for students and staff. COVID-19 testing is an effective way to reduce transmission, especially when layered with other precautionary measures.

We strongly recommend all families participate in this free program. Participation helps safeguard the wellbeing of the entire school community and gives you information to help you keep your children healthy.

Participation in the program is voluntary. A parent or guardian must register any student under 18 years old in order to participate. To learn more about COVID-19 testing, visit www.MAKOstrongschoolsNC.com

NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES: If your child or a household member receives a positive COVID test or if they are exposed to someone with COVID, please emails to your child's teacher and to hces-covid19@wcpss.net right away. An office staff member will reach out to assist with next steps.

View wcpss.net/WhenToReturn for requirements to return after a COVID-19 diagnosis, exposure, or symptoms. Be sure to review recent updates which include that students are no longer considered exposed while at school as schools are following all health precautions. Students will only be sent home if they are showing symptoms of illness.

Communication: Send ALL COVID-related emails to your child's teacher and to hces-covid19@wcpss.net

Virtual Academy: Virtual Academy remains closed and there are no exceptions.

Transportation Reminders πŸš—πŸšŒ

AM Carpool Efficiency Reminders

Please remember to pull forward as far as possible, have your student(s) open their own door, and put on your hazard lights if assistance is needed. Thank you!

Please Display Carpool Number Tags Every Afternoon

In order to ensure an efficient carpool process, please remember to hang carpool number tags to display clearly from your vehicle's rearview mirror. Please reference the image below for proper placement. This is a critical step to ensure students leave their classrooms and come outside to the correct location on the sidewalk to be picked up. Thank you!

Bus Tracking App

Please use the Here Comes the Bus app (App Store or Google Play Store) to monitor the location of your student’s bus and when it is approaching his/her stop. To sign up: https://herecomesthebus.com/parents/get-started/ . The WCPSS school code for school bus tracking is 67500. You will need to use your child's student ID number as well.

You can also follow @HCESBuses on Twitter to confirm when your child's bus leaves campus each afternoon.

ACTION REQUESTED: Restart Your Child's WCPSS Chromebook Weekly πŸ’»

WCPSS Technology Services has seen an increase in security issues due to WCPSS devices not being restarted regularly. Restarting a device allows updates for new security and productivity features.

Students and staff should restart their WCPSS devices once per week. Consider setting a specific day for this, such as a Restart Wednesday or Restart Friday. (Important: Closing the lid only locks the device and does not shut it down.)

Restarting also can resolve many other common issues impacting student devices. Always restart a WCPSS device before contacting the Help Desk.

Thank you!
