Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 13th January 2017
winter art
The Reception children have created beautiful pictures showing the silhouettes of leafless trees against clear night skies. It is amazing how well these pictures reflect our recent frosty nights, although maybe some of us would have preferred to have had more snow instead.
weekly reading raffle
As you know, it is a really important part of your child’s reading development to be given the opportunity to read regularly and often at home as well as school. To encourage this we have a ‘reading raffle’ every week in which the name of any child who has read five times is put in a ‘raffle’. If their name is pulled out they win a brand new book! If everyone in the class has read 5 times (and this is recorded in their reading record and signed by a parent or carer) then 5 names are pulled out!
To help encourage this and to give recognition to the week's best class, we will be publishing the percentage of children reading five times during the week on the Update.
This week our top scorer is Year 6!
Watch out for a parent workshop on paired reading...a brilliant way to enjoy reading with your child.

What happens to the food we eat?
What do our children eat?
In 2016, like most North Yorkshire schools, children in key stage 1 and 2 took part in a health and wellbeing survey. These are some of the findings in relation to healthy eating:
30% of the children had 5 portions of fruit and vegetables the day before the survey
25% of children said that they do not eat fresh fruit every day
46% said that they do not eat vegetables every day.
36% said that they never eat brown bread.
40% said that they had crisps (or similar) every day.
70% of children said that lessons on healthy eating at school were useful
100% of children said they can access water when they need it
We want to improve our education on healthy eating and alongside this we are developing a food policy for school which will encourage healthier eating. We would be grateful if you could help us by not bringing in cakes, sweets or any other sugary treats when it is your child's birthday.
In addition we are currently working on a policy for packed lunches which will tighten up the rules on what children are allowed to bring into school. Watch this space for more information.
opportunity to discuss local issues
Zoe Metcalfe, our local Harrogate Borough Councillor, enjoyed her visit on Monday afternoon and was delighted that some parents were able to raise local issues with her. She plans to make this a monthly session, and will be in the playground on the first Monday of the month at pick up time.
