Unit Description
In this unit we learned about area, perimeter, surface area, and volume. We looked at floor plans for bumper car rides and storm shelters. We counted the squares inside to find the area. Then we added the sides to find the perimeter. Then we used nets to help us find the area of 2D shapes in order to find the surface area of 3D shapes. Finally, we stacked cubes inside an empty box to find the volume of the box.
What is perimeter?
Perimeter is the distance around a two-dimensional shape. Perimeter is measured in units.
Perimeter = add all sides
What is area?
Area is the space inside a shape. Area is measured in square units.
Area of Square & Rectangle = length x width
Area of Triangle = base x height / 2
- Area of Paralleolgram = base x height
What is surface area?
Surface area is the total area of the surface of a three-dimensional object. Surface are is measured in square units.
Surface Area of Pyramid = (LxW) + 4(BxH/2)
- Surface Area of Rectangular Prism = 2(SxS) + 2(FxBK) + 2(TxB)
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Capacity. Volume is measured in cubic units.
Volume of Rectangular Prism = Length x WIdth x Height
