MLC Weekly News and Notes
January 30-February 3
Hello, MLC community. Welcome to the second half of the school year! What a cold entry into the new Quarter this week! Please remember to send warm layers for students as we will be venturing outdoors for breaks and recess. If you are in need of a warm coat - we can help! Please contact our Social Worker - Clement.
9x12 students will be changing classes with a new schedule starting Monday. Please take a moment to check Parent/StudentVue to take a look. We can also help in the front office. 7x8 students have a few elective changes as well.
9x12 students will begin Wednesday internships this semester! They have been prepping for these the first half of the year. We are excited to get started and check in with how they are going soon.
Report cards for Quarter 2 will be sent home in backpacks this week. You can also view through ParentVue.
I still continue to reflect and dig into our MLC Character Traits which consist of:
My plan is to challenge each student, staff member and greater community to think of how we are seeing and acting these each day at MLC. I will be inviting students to tell me more about what our MLC Character Traits mean to them in this coming term. I look forward to hearing what wisdom they have to share.

Successful Schools Survey Is OPEN!
Our district values your feedback! We are currently surveying MLC families in order to gain insight into your perception of our school and district effectiveness. To ensure we continue to provide high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of our learners and prepare them for college and career, we need your feedback. We want to know what you think.
PPS has partnered with Panorama Education to conduct our 2022-2023 Family Survey. Panorama safeguards your privacy, keeping your responses confidential. The survey shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete, and will be a valuable source of information for us as we work to make our schools and district as good as they can be.
You may complete the survey online between now and February 10th using a
computer, tablet, or smartphone by visiting the Panorama website Link.

NEW Students Interested in Enrolling at MLC for 2023-24!

Incoming K-5th graders:
Our annual Kx5 Open House will take place on Tuesday, February 28th at 5:30pm. Please join us to learn about our exciting alternative program including academics, traditions, and opportunities. All are welcome!
For those that cannot make it in person on February 28th, there will be a shorter virtual session with Suezann to learn more about MLC March 2nd at 6:00 pm. The meeting link to be posted on our website by March 1.
The PPS lottery for incoming 2023-24 K-5th graders will be open from February 15th - March 17th. When the lottery opens, you can apply here: K-5 Lottery Application (remember this won't open until 2/15.)
Incoming 6th-12th graders:
For any families who missed the lottery window for enrollment in MLC for the 2023-24 school year, you can still apply using the Hardship Petition application. Please make sure you select the 2023-24 school year in your application. You can find this application here: Hardship Petition
For any families who are interested in a mid-year transfer, you also will apply using the Hardship Petition application. Please make sure to select the 2022-23 school year in the application. These applications need to be in by Monday January 9th to be eligible for a second semester transfer.

MLC PTSA will once again host parking for Timbers and Thorns games this school year to raise much needed funds for student activities (classroom supplies, electives, field trips, and all the reasons why we love MLC.).

Safety Updates and Reminders
6th-12th OFF CAMPUS LUNCH SIGN OUT - YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!
Starting Tuesday January 17th, we are implementing a sign out process for students choosing to go offsite for lunch. Here is that process:
6th grade: Sign out on a clipboard in their homeroom classroom. (Maggie or Kathleen)
7th-12th: Sign out using phone or device with QR code located at the front doors or on paper sign out in the front office.
Students will not need to sign back in due to teachers taking attendance after lunch.
MLC has received several COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test kits. The kits are available in the main office.
Communications about inclement weather go out in a variety of ways, including text messages, robocalls, emails, and are posted on the PPS website. If you are a parent or guardian, a student, or a PPS staff member, you can opt in to receive texts by texting YES to 68453.
1st-8th students should not arrive to MLC before 8:15 a.m. At that time, students will need to wait outside until 8:25 unless they are eating breakfast. Breakfast students may enter the cafeteria at 8:15. Students may not enter the other areas of the school until 8:25 to start the school day at 8:30 a.m.
Unfortunately, we do not have enough staff to monitor all areas of the building and outdoors before those times. Teachers and staff are preparing for the day.
We want to make sure all students are safe and in designated areas where there is adequate supervision.
Kindergarten students will now be dropped off and picked up in the Kindergarten classroom!

State Testing 30 Day Notice with Opt Out Form: December 6, 2022
As required by the Oregon Department of Education, we are providing you the 30 Day Notice and Opt Out Form. The notice is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian and Somali on the PPS Research, Assessment, and Accountability website.
Statewide testing is part of our balanced assessment system that offers all students, especially historically underserved students, opportunities to demonstrate their progress. Information provided by student assessments is critical in helping us determine district and school priorities for improving student learning.

Paid Youth Opportunity: Uplift Youth Summit
Here is a cool opportunity shared by our HS Career Coordinator:
Feb. 17-20, Uplift Virtual Youth Summit, Youth ERA; Students receive a $75 stipend for participation and a chance to win a PS5, funded by a grant from the Oregon Health Authority. Now registering youth for scholarships for Oregon youth, ages 14-19.
As described by a student participant, “The main goal is to train teens in peer support so that they can be there for each other in crisis. Uplift prioritizes your mental health and as a result, teens who’ve done Uplift say they have improved self confidence and personal growth, and feel more capable in reaching out to peers.” Students will learn how to identify signs of distress, practice listening and self care skills, identify strengths, build resilience, and counter issues like bullying and youth suicide.

Art is ALIVE at MLC!
Do you wonder what's going on in the Kx8 Art Room? Art teacher Ned and his students are posting their creations and flops on Instagram at bettys_atelier_mlc in honor of Betty Mather, one of MLC's original teacher/founders! Betty taught in room 106 for the first third of our school's history. Betty's space was the beating heart of the school where all children met and created.
