Summer Reading, Learning and Fun!
For Medfield PreK to Grade 5 Students
Summer is almost here! It's a time to have fun, see friends and family, swim, play outside and maybe even slow down. It's also an important time to keep on reading and learning too. Below you will find a few ideas and resources for making reading and learning fun.
Did you know?
"Kids who read during the summer skip the 'Summer Slide' altogether. Research shows that students who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who don't often slide backwards and lose the leaps they've made during the school year. Help your child be prepared for the next school year by encouraging them to read and participate in some of these learning opportunities listed below. Reading can be one of the many fun activities children fill their summer time with. Research has shown it is also much more! Children who participate in public library summer reading programs not only avoid the “summer slide” in learning, but also score higher on reading achievement tests than those who do not participate." (from ALSC)

An Exciting Partnership!
The Medfield Public Schools are partnering up with the Medfield Public Library for their summer program, On Your Mark, Get Set... READ! We are very excited about this collaboration because it promotes reading while school is not in session. Children are encouraged to participate in the fun activities planned that support literacy (this supports our mission to keep kids reading). Kids can earn free books, read to a dog, make things, be a science explorer, learn how to play Harry Potter's Quidditch, see movies outdoors and lots more!
Visit the Medfield Public Library to learn more or check it out on their website.
Books Kids Will Want To Read!
The following lists, created by The Association for Library Service for Children (ALSC), are full of book titles to keep children engaged in reading throughout the summer. Four summer reading lists are available for Birth through Preschool, K-2nd, 3rd-5th and 6th-8th grade students.
