Dear Centennial Families -
We started off the week with a day of professional learning for staff. What an important and meaningful day together! We listened to guest speaker Dr. David Tranter share information about The Third Path. We have this resource in our school and will use it throughout the year as we refine our practices. We also had the opportunity to learn more about some of the LDSB directives, as well as spend time investigating some new resources from the LDSB to better meet the literacy needs of students. It was a productive day of learning together!
This week students in Grade 3 started to participate in the 3 part Swim to Survive Program. This program operates across Ontario as a way to teach students how they can survive if they find themselves in water. This is not a learn to swim program, rather a survival program. Given the many bodies of water around the Kingston area, this is especially important for Centennial PS students. Check out the photo below!
Centennial PS Runners represented the school well at the "Around the Park" event at Lancaster Drive PS. Students demonstrated great enthusiasm and sportsmanship! A big thanks to families for transporting students to the event, and to the many staff at Centennial who volunteer to coach and support student runners!
Please see information below about how to win one of several $50 gift cards! Also, we will be starting a Dieleman's fundraiser that families (and their friends and families) are welcome to participate in. More details below!
Over the last couple of weeks I have had the chance to go around to classes and get to know students better. I have been sharing a message with all classes that as Centennial Comets we need to Show Up! Stand Up! Never Give Up! We want students to show up to school and to try new things. We want students to stand up for themselves, for others, and for the truth. We also want students to keep trying and persevere and not give up! We will continue to share and reinforce these ideas throughout the year.
There is so much learning happening at Centennial - be it in the classroom gathered on the carpet for whole group learning, or around tables in the classroom for inquiry, or outside in the garden or local woods for science inquiry - there is lots happening at the school. Centennial Public School is a great place to learn and grow!

Fundraising
Dieleman's is a catalogue fundraiser where families (and friends and coworkers, etc.) can order items online. Delivery is either directly to home or to the school for pick up. The fundraiser will start in the next week or so with catalogues coming home with every student. Some items for purchase include cards and wrap, gift items, chocolate, dip mixes, kitchen gadgets, etc.
Families are welcome and encouraged to participate in the fundraiser as you are able. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support students at Centennial PS.
Running Club Update
Running Club has now ended for most of our students. Running Club will be back in the spring once the snow is gone. Those students who can run 2km without stopping will continue to train in order to prepare for October 14th Fort Henry Hill competition. All the running coaches are extremely proud of the performances of our runners at the Lancaster Race this past week.
The Running Club t-shirts should be delivered soon. Thank you to all those families who sent in an order form for their child. It is not too late to order a shirt. The shirts are $17 each. Many families have paid $20 for the shirts to help out other families who need financial assistance. Please email Ms. Byers byersc@limestone.on.ca if you wish to order a shirt or need help covering the cost for your child's shirt.
A huge thanks to all of the coaches from Centennial PS who have volunteered their time to train and work with student athletes!
