The Beginning of the Space Shuttle
Columbia was the first shuttle to reach space,in 1981.Columbia carried dozens of astronauts into space during the next two decades, reaching several milestones.Columbia also underwent upgrades as technology advanced.However,the shuttle and a seven member crew were lost over Texas when Columbia burned up during retry on February 1,2003.

On this day in 2011,NASA’s space shuttle program completes its final, and 135th,mission.During the program’s 30 year history,the shuttle's crews conducted important research that serviced the Hubble Space Telescope and helped in the construction of the International Space Station among other activities.NASA retired the shuttles to focus on a deep space exploration program that could one day send astronauts to asteroids and Mars.

Spacesuits help astronauts in many ways,the suits protect astronauts from getting to hot or cold.Spacesuits also give astronauts oxygen to breathe while they are working in space.The suits hold plenty of water to drink.They also keep astronaut from getting hurt by space dust.The suits even have special gold-lined visors to protect eyes from bright sunlight.
