## Taylor's News!

This week in Math and Science/Social Studies:

Math– This week we will continue practicing elapsed time and then will begin our Fractions and Decimals 2nd 9 weeks unit of study. We will continue fractions and decimals when we return from break.

Think Through Math - Students have a unique username and password for this new program. A parent letter went home in the Wednesday Titan folder but if that didn't make it home, you can read about TTM off my webpage. I've also created a direct link on the math homework page. Students took their username and passwords home this past week but feel free to email me if it didn't make it home. This would be a great resource to practice their math skills over the winter break!

Science – We will wrap up our Properties Matter Unit of study this week with our last investigation involving toothpaste and a performance assessment.

Social Studies - We have completed our research on specific Texas Indian Tribes and will be sharing our results with the class this week. All students will create and bring in an artifact that relates to their tribe on Monday, December 16th. The artifact can be real, clay model, drawing, toy, etc. (no harmful weapons, a bow without the arrow is fine, arrow heads are fine) The artifact must be something that their tribe would have used, worn, etc. Students are welcome to prepare a power point, short video, comic life, or other presentation on their tribe for extra credit and bring it in to share this week.

## Stern's News!

This week in Language Arts:

READING: We are beginning a fantasy unit. Students have selected a fantasy book to read at home and will be expected to complete a book report outline and project that will be due on January 17th. The yellow report packet went home last Monday, December 9th. If it is lost, another copy can be found on Mrs. Stern's website. We will be continuing with "Theme"~the author's main message. Usually theme includes a life lesson, or shares the author's opinion on a subject such as love or friendship.

WRITING: Our grammar focus this week will be using descriptive adjectives. We will be working on word choice, focus, and organization of our writing. We will be writing some imaginative text this week with an emphasis on fantasy.

SPELLING: This week's spelling words come from Unit 15. Our spelling concept this week will be frequent spelling patterns for the /u/ sound~oo, ew, ue, and u-consonant-e. Frequent spelling patterns for /yu/ are u, ew, ue, and u-consonant-e. Spelling words for the week will be recorded by students in the far right column of the week's agenda. Pace Language Arts students will have an extra 8 words per week. Any students wishing to include the pace words into their spelling test may do so.

## Click below for our Language Arts homework site!

All homework can be accessed online through our class websites (see homework links above). We will have 2 pages for Math and 2 pages for Language Arts each week. If you are unable to print the pages, students are encouraged to put answers on regular notebook paper and bring in the answers on Friday. If you won't have access to a computer during the week, please let your homeroom teacher know early in the week. ;)

## This Week's Spelling Words are from Unit 15!

If your child would like to practice their spelling words in a fun way, have them go to the Spelling Practice Link below:

## Class Blogs!

Students can access their homeroom's class blog from home. The blog gives them an opportunity to practice writing and communication skills in an ever expanding digital world. We have discussed the importance of students using their best "netiquette"! Manners online are just as important as in person. "Treat others how you want to be treated!"
