Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a very busy couple of weeks with 2021 Kindy interviews and NAPLAN testing. I will be away Friday week at a Principal’s meeting.
Good luck to all the students who are participating in our Cross Country tomorrow. I wish them all the best.
The 2019 NAPLAN testing has taken place and I am advising families that they need to be very mindful that the results from this year will most likely not be a true reflection of where your child is at with Reading, Writing, Spelling and Maths. Many schools have had issues in delivering the tests and students have had to resit the tests. This in itself raises concerns about the stress levels of students in having to resit the test/s and whether the stress levels will affect their results. Comparisons between schools will be problematic as some schools have sat test/s twice, some have sat tests as paper and online and some have completed tests only once. I would advise families that if you have concerns when you receive the results that you meet with your classroom teacher and discuss your child’s progress. As always, a reminder that NAPLAN is a one-off test and should never be regarded as the indicator as to how well your child is doing at school. A child’s progress at school should always look at all the assessment that the school does and the results from NAPLAN - this will then you give a true picture of your child’s progress.
God bless.
Allen McMahon

‘You promote and preserve the trust and privilege inherent in your relationship with all members of the school community.’
This statement calls on us to preserve the dignity of all people, particularly recognising the vulnerability of our students.
Examples of breaches include but are not limited to:
Staff
● A staff member not demonstrating a positive, approachable and inclusive manner
● A staff member not showing empathy
● A staff member contacting students on social media
Students
● A student contacting a staff member on social media
Parents
● A parent making unsolicited contact with students
Year 2 Play it Safe
The Year 2 children had a fabulous day learning about road safety knowledge at the Constable Care Safety School in a fully functioning safety school layout. We learnt how to be safe around a school Kiss and Drive, rail and pedestrian crossings, shared paths, bus stops and train stations, and bike riders. Many thanks to our parent volunteers who assisted the children throughout the day; your time, patience and assistance are sincerely appreciated!
Sacramental Choirs
All students from Years 3 to 6 are invited to be part of this years Sacramental Choirs for the Confirmation Mass on Saturday 8 June 2019 at 6pm and First Holy Communion Mass on Sunday 23 June 2019 at 9:30am.
If you are able to join Choirs on either or both of these dates to support our St Columba's students receiving these Sacraments, please let me know.

Lost Property
There is a tub of unnamed lost property in the undercover area. Parents and students are encouraged to check the lost property tub on a regular basis. Parents are reminded to please clearly label all items of property so that when lost, the property can be returned to its owner.
Artist of the Week
Imogen from Year 6 is the Artist of the Week. She was chosen for her delicious-looking Gobstopper Pop Art piece! Imogen's favourite thing about art is that it is relaxing and she can let her imagination run wild. She particularly loves drawing dragons because she finds them interesting and fun to draw. Imogen's favourite artist is Amok Island because he is very creative and does very realistic pieces.
The Gobstoppers she drew are her own creation. The pink one is Valentine's Edition, the red one Fiery Edition (A.K.A Spicy Edition), the blue one is Unicorn Edition and the green one is Mint Edition. To make her artwork she used watercolour pencils, fine-liner pens, foam and a printed background. Imogen loves art and is looking forward to doing more!

News from our Recycling Team
Tip of the Week:
Look for the REDcycle logo on your soft plastics and take your soft plastic waste to your local Woolworths or Coles. There is a REDcycle bin at the entrance to all stores. These include: bread bags, biscuit packaging, chip packets, chocolate wrappers, rice bags and most everyday plastics that you can't place in your roadside recycling. Set up a REDCYCLE collection bin in your kitchen and have the family contribute to it.
Beauty and Skin Care Containers:
Look out for the beauty and skin care containers collection point at school now. A place to recycle containers and pumps from your care products.
Breadtags for Wheelchairs:
We have included bread tags at our collection point. These tags go to a collection to assist in building wheelchairs. It is amazing how our waste plastics can be used and for such great causes. Little Tags Make a Big Impact! Bread tags come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Made of High Impact Polystyrene they have a good recycling value. Please follow this link, Breadtags for Wheelchairs, for more information about this great recycling project.
Wednesday - Compost Day:
REMEMBER that WEDNESDAY each week is our COMPOSTING day at school. Place your organic waste in the buckets provided.
