CAMPUS CLIMATE AND CULTURE
MISSION, VISION & CORE VALUES
MISSION:
The TJ Feeder schools embrace high quality learning opportunities which honor the unique strengths and diverse needs of all Scholars.
VISION:
The TJ feeder schools will be the premier feeder to attract and educate all Scholars to positively impact our community and world.
CORE VALUES:
Innovation, Collaboration, Excellence and Integrity
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR..........
Leaders,
Thank you for such a productive feeder pattern meeting on Wednesday. Also, thank you to Ms. Massey and Mrs. Eberhardt for the hospitality and learning walk experience that TJ ECHS provided the feeder. Your Taskforce presentations were FANTASTIC!! I was extremely pleased with each teams collaborative spirit and effort towards delivering relevant professional development to your peers that would add value to everyone's campus. I can not wait to see what awesome presentations your groups have in November.
During our feeder pattern meeting, we analyzed our common assessment data and identified next steps to support areas of growth. I appreciate your resilience and dedication to EXCELLENCE AND EQUITY FOR ALL OUR SCHOLARS!
This upcoming week marks the second week of the second six weeks grading period for our scholars! Now is the time to pay close attention to your teachers reteach plans and how scholar achievement results align with the level and quality of instruction happening inside of your classrooms. Teachers should be supported through ongoing effective feedback, especially in places where the data shows room for growth with academic adjustments being made. As I have observed many classrooms the first 5 weeks, very seldom do we see teachers making instructional adjustments throughout the lesson cycle, instead of waiting until the DOL is analyzed to create the small group instruction reteach plans. Re-teaching should be occurring during your lesson cycle if your checks for understanding state that our scholars are not mastery the concept introduced. You will be sent a graphic this week to utilize with your teachers to ensure that you are reviewing when teachers should be making the informed decisions to reteach immediately if good first instruction is not occurring during the lesson.
This week's message continues with highlighting Stephen Covey on Habit 4; THINK WIN?WIN!
Habit 4 is the first of the Habits dealing with what Covey calls interdependence - working effectively with other people. In describing each habit Stephen Covey shares powerful insights and "Think Win/Win" is no exception. Stephen Covey makes the point that the habit of effective interpersonal leadership is Think Win/Win.
This is the habit of always looking for a solution that benefits you AND the other person or group. What's fascinating is that the solution is usually unexpected. "Win/Win is a belief in the Third Alternative. It's not your way or my way; it's a better way, a higher way".
Most of us will say "yeah, yeah, we know this already. Win/Win's the way to go..." It's almost as if it's the socially acceptable attitude. But in reality people are likely to act in their own best interest and when we look we find a 'Win/Lose', 'Lose/Win', or just a plain 'Win' scenario playing out.
After all, many of us are brought up to believe that winning is everything. In reality this is a habit to be learned and practiced. Take a moment to consider what WIN-WIN opportunities are you providing your campuses.
Here's to another great week of teaching and learning!
THE TJ FEEDER IS IN IT TO WIN IT!

SUMMER DRESS CODE
With the approaching fall and cooler weather, please be advised that the summer dress code ended September 29, 2017. All employees are expected to resume professional business attire. Please refer to (DH LOCAL) and (DH Regulation) policies for dress code guidelines and expectations.
RETENTION AND RECRUITMENT
In an effort to maintain and regain our market share, the student recruitment and retention initiative is a priority for our district. Assigning staff members to conduct exit surveys with scholars and their families as part of the withdrawal process, is the way to gauge why our scholars are leaving. In the weekly updates, I attached exemplars that you can utilize when scholars withdraw from your campuses. Our feeder had the most scholars withdraw in the entire district!
The document below, outlines the number of students withdrawn from the TJ feeder by campus. Please send me an email by no later than WEDNESDAY to provide a rationale as to why scholars withdrew from your campuses if you have 5 or more withdrawals.

ACHIEVE 3000
CAMPUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The Achieve 3000 team is eager to provide campus-based professional development to ensure teachers are comfortable using Achieve3000 as a part of their instructional routine, as well as monitoring student progress in the program. Campus principals and/or CIC’s can CLICK HERE to schedule their PD.
All students in 3rd-8th grade need to complete the LevelSet assessment by October 13th (next Friday). Completing the assessment is vital to establish each student’s BOY non-fiction Lexile score.
Reminder, students in bilingual classes need to take the LevelSet assessment in both English and Spanish. There have been several schools asking about their completion percentage and this is usually what is causing it to be lower than they expected it to be.
Please see below for your LevelSet completion data as of 10/2/17.
Dallas ISD Spelling Bee
The Dallas ISD Spelling Bee is open to students in grades four through eight. Schools who decide to participate will need to hold a campus spelling bee by January 12, 2018 to determine the school’s champions. All school champions and runners-up will then compete at the district level onJanuary 30, 2018. The winner will advance to the Dallas County Competition to be held in February.
There are several steps that need to be taken over the next few weeks in order to participate:
- Designate a Campus Spelling Bee Coordinator.
- Enroll your school for the Scripps Spelling Bee atwww.spellingbee.com.
- Campuses are responsible for the registration fee of $151. Schools may pay the enrollment fee by credit card or by check, with a $7.50 processing fee added for check payments. Scripps does not accept purchase orders.
- Enrollment period is from August 22 through October 13, 2017. Please take into account additional time that may be needed for Dallas ISD to process the check request for your campus.
3. Once you have received confirmation of your enrollment with Scripps, please register with the District at http://bit.ly/DallasISDBee
4. Scripps does not notify the district of your intent to participate. In order for your campus to be eligible to participate in the Scripps competition, your school must complete the district registration form no later than October 13, 2016.
The Dallas ISD Spelling Bee Handbook can be viewed athttp://bit.ly/DallasISDBeeHandbook.

THOMAS JEFFERSON PPR CHECKPOINT#2 SCHEDULE
Event Overview
United to Learn will recruit volunteers and sponsors to implement projects on each DISD elementary campus within the United network. Each campus has the opportunity for up to $5,000 in campus resources or project materials to be purchased on their behalf. In addition, United to Learn is committing to a minimum of 15 volunteers per campus, with no limit on the number of volunteers or projects taking place on your campus.
CAMPUS WAIVERS AND EXEMPTIONS CORRECTIONS
1. Attached is the class size waiver report. IF your campus received a unit during leveling, the students need to be moved into their new classroom. These need to all be handled by noon on Friday, as we are pulling the report to identify specific classrooms and the reason for the waiver. For each waiver, we need to indicate to TEA why a waiver is needed. Sean helped us with that information last year. I know most of them will be due to budget. However, if there is another reason like shortage of BE teachers, insufficient space (to add another teacher), etc. please document it. We will be asking you for this information.
2. Also, about 2 weeks ago, MLEP sent out the exceptions report to each campus. At this time, each campus needs to review the report and make corrections or get clarification from the MLEP department.

Early Learning Beginning of Year ISIP Curricular Documents
All K-2 students should participate in ongoing formative assessment at the beginning, middle and end of the year. The assessment will be done using Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP). The beginning of year window is October 1, 2017-October 31, 2017.
To help campuses prepare teachers for this administration, Early Learning has created a training slide deck for Istation’s ISIP. The deck can be accessed here and should be used to support both new teachers and returning teachers.
Early Learning provides many curricular documents for teachers to utilize while planning for instruction. Did you know that our department provides daily routines and activities for Word Study in both English and Spanish? These documents provide teachers with systematic, explicit routines to teach Print Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Spelling Student Expectations (SEs) throughout the year.
Click here for information on how to access and utilize all of the Early Learning curricular documents.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Check SchoolNet for more information on upcoming Professional Development opportunities including the last chance for K–2 teachers to attend Academic Rigor 2 sessions on October 28.
EIA REGULATION-FAILURE REPORTS
EIA Regulation (our grading policy) requires failure rate intervention plans be developed if rates exceed the thresholds at each level (elementary, middle or high) for a teacher / course / or subject. Further, it requires a plan be developed by the principal at the campus level if the threshold exceeds such rates across a subject (course for secondary) or grade level.
Teachers have plenty of time to decrease failure rates. Please send home missing assignments. Points may be deducted for those assignments.
Please be reminded that homework can only be utilized if it helps the grade. Students should not have failing grades on their report cards due to homework. Attached, you will find EIA Regulation policy.
The teachers should ensure they are providing the following for students. ( read chart below).
TEACHER ATTENDANCE
Just a reminder that attendance plays an important role on our scholars being served by their classroom teacher vs. a substitute. We do not want our fill rate to dip to its lowest level as it did last year. Ensure that you stress the important of being present each and every day.
As you know, the pay rates for substitutes have an incentive and it costs the District additional money on Monday and Friday because those are the days your staff is showing the most missed days. Please ensure that you are aggressively monitoring the substitute situation when it comes to approved absences for your staff.

Getting Young Students Thinking and Talking Like Scientists
“When teachers support students to ask, explore, read, write, and discuss science ideas, they can increase opportunities for sophisticated disciplinary talk in the primary-grade classroom,” say Tanya Wright and Amelia Wenk Gotwals (Michigan State University) in this article in The Reading Teacher. “Students’ curiosity about science can be a powerful motivator to promote talk, and students will talk most when they are excited about an idea and wonder what happens.”
But kindergarten students get an average of only 2.3 minutes of science a day – even less in high-poverty schools. The paucity of science vocabulary and conceptual instruction is directly linked to lower literacy achievement later in elementary school. Wright and Gotwals have developed the SOLID Start project to promote science talk in primary-grade classrooms in these five ways:
• Asking driving questions – A teacher might launch a curriculum unit with a question like, “Why are only some of the plants at the front of the school dying?” or “Why are there different types of clouds, and how are they connected to whether we’ll be able to play outside today?” Questions like these can link the content and activities of a unit to the central theme.
• Exploring science phenomena – The teacher can choose activities that get students investigating the driving question – for example, examining the different plants in front of the school to find clues as to why some are dying and others aren’t. Some verbal prompts:
What is the reason that…
What do I want to know about…
I wonder…
What if…
How could…
Why does…
The teacher might record students’ talk during explorations on an easel sheet, linking observations back to the driving question.
• Talking about read-alouds – Reading books with the class can extend the exploration well beyond what can be seen and touched in the school and introduce a wider range of science vocabulary. The teacher might make strategic selections of vocabulary words that will enrich the exploration and get students talking about how each book relates to the driving question. “Remember that you don’t have to read an entire informational text,” say Wright and Gotwals. “It is fine to read a section of the text that supports students in answering the driving question.”
• Talking about drawing and writing – Students can be prompted to sketch their observations in notebooks, watch the teacher draw diagrams and pictures, and then discuss what it all means. “As young students explain their models, pictures, and writing to peers and adults,” say Wright and Gotwals, “their work provides a meaningful context for practicing extended science talk and for teachers to both support students in sense-making and to press them for evidence-based explanations.”
• Scaffolding students’ thinking – Toward the end of each unit, the teacher pulls together the class’s explorations, read-alouds, visuals, and discussions and prompts students to arrive at the answer to the driving question. This kind of pull-it-all-together discussion may be challenging for students, and it’s helpful to have a word wall, pictures, graphics, and other displays to scaffold the discussion, along with some verbal prompts:
Can you explain more about that…
Why do you think…
What made you think that…
What did you do when…
What do you predict will…
