Pollock background
Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming. He was the youngest of 5 brothers and moved around the West a lot as a young child. He went to Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California. When he was 18, he moved out to New York City with his brother Charles. He studied under Charles' art teacher, Thomas Hart Benton.
Contributions
He was an artist during the abstract expressionist time period. He is also known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. One reason he was so influential was because of his "drip period" between 1947 and 1950. He created his most memorable works during this time, although I personally prefer his earlier works.
Full Fathom Five (1947)
Oil on canvas with nails, tacks, buttons, key, coins, cigarettes, matches, etc.
(1951)
Black and sepia ink on mulberry paper
(1938-41)
Pencil and colored pencil on paper
Circle (1938-41)
I really like this piece because there are a lot of bright colors. There is plenty of movement and funny little shapes as well. I personally like bright, random, abstract colors. This piece shows all of that, and that is why I chose to do my project on Pollock.
