Freshman Academy

Motto: Steeped in tradition, focused on the future!

Mission: The mission of the unified Freshmen Academy is to facilitate and support all students' efforts and provide them with specific skills that can be applied to making a successful transition from middle school to graduation.

Vision: The GHS Freshman Academy vision is the engagement of students in a supportive environment that values self-motivation, independence, commitment, high expectations, positive social interactions, and meaningful relationships and develops the responsible, adaptable learners of the future.

Greenville High School State Report Card Rating: "Excellent"

The State Department of Education School Report Cards have been released and GHS earned an "Excellent" overall rating (the highest score) and a "Good" improvement rating. This is a testament to the wonderful students and hard working teachers at GHS. The report card rating is based on Graduation Rate, HSAP (exit exam) scores, and End of Course Exam scores. School Report Cards will be sent home to students in the coming weeks.

Academy Students of the Month

Each month, the Freshman Academy recognizes students that prove to be good citizens and outstanding scholars. The students selected are of the highest caliber and embody the characteristics valued by the Academy. When selected, students receive a certificate and a trophy.

The Academy teachers describe this group as high achievers, hard workers, positive role models, good citizens, as having upstanding character, and as having high expectations for themselves and others. The class of 2017 should be proud of the accomplishments of these leaders.

Positive Referrals

We have given out over 60 positive referrals so far this year. The Academy likes to recognize and reward students for displaying leadership, positive behavior, and academic improvements. Here are some of the latest recipients.

First Quarter Goal Celebration

Our students set individual academic goals in each of their core classes and we reward students that meet them. The Freshman Academy hosted over 160 students that either had straight A's or met their first quarter academic goals. Students received ice cream and a GHS draw string backpack for their achievements. We hope to see even more students next quarter!

Freshman Assembly "Develop your talents, skills, and abilities..."

Brooks Harper, author of "7 Skills to Make Mills," came to speak with our freshman about developing their talents, skills and abilities into marketable assets for the workplace. He spoke to our students about developing their "brand" and how to market it.

After School Tutoring

We offer free after school tutoring in the media center every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4-5 p.m. Students can get help in their core subjects by certified teachers or they can use the computers to complete work. We keep a roster of students that attend.

USA Test Prep

All freshman students have free access to a program called USA TestPrep. Students can login at www.usatestprep.com and take practice tests, practice quizzes, play games aligned to their class standards, and even watch podcasts that reteach material. Let's say you are struggling with two step equations.....go online and watch a podcast after class to see another teacher showing you how to do it. If you need your login, ask an Academy teacher!

OnCourse Web Pages allow students and parents to know homework assignments!!

The Freshman Academy teachers maintain "OnCourse" web pages that allow students and parents to know daily homework assignments. You can access this two ways: click http://www.oncoursesystems.com/school/webpage/11653885 and click on Academy faculty and then view the teacher's Homework and Events calendars. You can also access the page from the GHS main page--->Academics-->Freshman Academy-->Visit Our OnCourse Academy Page-->Academy Faculty. Students can also check their child's grades through the "Parent Portal." Contact Cathy Phelps in guidance for Parent Portal access. 355-5504

Online Bullying Prevention Web Reporting System

Our Freshman Guidance Counselor, Ms. Bishop, is spearheading an initiative to allow students and parents to report, through an anonymous online reporting system, any incidents of bullying that they witness. It is our goal for students to receive an education in a bully free environment. If you witness incidents of bullying, go to: http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/gvilleh/main.asp?titleid=bullying
