The Lift Garage History & Mission

Working with people experiencing homelessness, longtime social worker Cathy Heying repeatedly saw how devastating the cost of commercial car repair could be for people. In a domino effect, people who couldn’t afford to get their cars fixed couldn’t get to work and so they lost their jobs. Without jobs, people lacked the income to pay for housing and ended up in shelter.

It was also evident that many people who couldn’t afford the cost of commercial car repair, felt that they equally could not afford to stop driving some very dangerous vehicles. Too often people spent bleak Minnesota winters living in cars without brakes or heat.

After recognizing this pattern, Cathy went back to school to earn a degree in Automotive Technology. In April 2013, with board members, donors and volunteers to support us, The Lift Garage opened for one day a week in a rented location in South Minneapolis, famously known as, the ‘garage behind Dan’s Car Wash.’

Shortly after celebrating our fifth anniversary, The Lift Garage moved into it’s own location at 2401 E. Lake Street in Minneapolis. The Lift Garage has expanded services, providing low-cost car repair, free pre-purchase inspections, and regularly offered car care classes. The Lift charges $15/hour for labor and all parts are sold at cost.

The Lift Garage offers people a vehicle out of poverty by:

  • providing low-cost quality car repair,
  • connecting with community partners to strengthen the support network, and
  • linking customers to needed resources.
