Counselor's Corner - Mrs. Tanikawa
We’re excited to be using a new curriculum for 3rd, 4th & 5th grade this year called Sources of Strength. This curriculum will help us think about, develop, and practice positive social and emotional skills along with identifying and growing the strengths in our lives. At the core of the curriculum are eight Strengths: Family Support, Positive Friends, Mentors, Healthy Activities, Generosity, Spirituality, Physical Health, and Mental Health (See Strength definitions on back). Each of these strengths shows up in a person’s life differently. Each lesson invites students to explore strength in their own lives, empowers them to grow their strengths and build resilience in order to promote health and wellness for themselves and others.

PE News from Mr. Miller & Mr. Johnston
Picture Retake Day is November 10th
If you missed the September 28th Picture Day or need a retake, our photographer will be back on November 10th. If you are having retakes, please send the original photos and packet to school on this day. Images will also be available online to order direct from the photographer. Go to dorianstudio.com for details.
If you ordered pictures from the original photo day, those will be mailed directly to your home. If you have not already received those, they should arrive any day now.
Winter weather sometimes brings with it dry, cracked lips. It is OKAY for your child to bring “Chapstick” to school as long as they keep it in their backpack and use it as needed. The health room does not provide any remedies or treatments for chapped lips.

OBOB Tip #1 (Oregon Battle of Books)
READ, READ, READ! Start reading the books. Check on the OBOB website for the list of books for grades 3-5. Click the "3-5 Annotated List" at the bottom for details on each book. More details to come regarding creating teams.
Bonus Tip: Read at least 2 books before teams are created (required) and audio books count!

IN-DISTRICT STUDENT TRANSFER APPLICATIONS OPEN NOVEMBER 1-30
Students who want to attend a school other than their assigned school may apply for an in-district transfer (IDT) between November 1–30, 2021. This includes elementary, middle, high school and students who would like to transfer to the EDGE online program.
If your student already has an approved IDT, you do not need to fill out the application.
There is no guarantee a transfer request will be approved. Students attending school on an IDT are not eligible for bus transportation. IDT applications received after November 30, 2021, will not be considered. If an IDT is granted at this time, the students will start at the new school when they return to school in January 2022.
In-district transfer request forms can be picked up at your student’s assigned school. They will also be posted on the Student Transfers page on November 1. The webpage will also include instructions on how to turn in the forms via email, snail mail.
It is preferred that families fill out the forms and drop them off at their assigned schools.
AMERICAN/ALASKAN NATIVE CELEBRATION 2021
COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND ANTI-RACISM
The first resolution of its kind was developed through collaboration with district staff, leadership, community feedback and engagement.
At its meeting Tuesday night, the Salem-Keizer Public Schools Board of Directors voted 4-2 to approve a resolution recognizing the board and district’s commitment to equity and anti-racism. One board director was absent. It is the first time a resolution of its kind was introduced in SKPS.
ALL STUDENTS GRADUATE PREPARED
In the event of bad weather, district officials will make the decision by 5:15 a.m. that day to close all or selected schools or to delay the start of school.
If schools are closed or start times delayed, all students and staff will get a recorded message to the phone number on record with the district. This message will tell you about school cancellation, delay to start times or district closure. Calls begin going out at 6 a.m. Make sure your contact information is up to date. Families who need to update their phone number should contact their school.
You can also visit our website at www.salemkeizer.org and click on the Emergency Closures & Delays tab at the top of the page. In addition, a message will be posted on the district's Facebook and Twitter accounts as soon as a decision to cancel school, delay school, or close the district is made.
In the event that inclement weather is predicted, but there is no change to school schedules, that confirmation will be posted on social media channels; however, an automated phone call likely will not be used.
SALEM-KEIZER PUBLIC SCHOOLS LAUNCHES NEW COVID-19 DASHBOARD
With nearly 41,000 students in our schools amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, safety and well-being of our students, families and staff is, without question, our highest priority. Open communication and transparency play critical roles in safety and we want to ensure you have accurate and timely information on how COVID-19 is impacting our schools.
We have officially launched our COVID-19 data dashboard for the 2021-22 school year. Please know that this dashboard is still ongoing further development and may continue to have minor tweaks and improvements over the coming weeks.

Remember, COVID-19 impacts us all daily. It is critical that we follow all recommended health and safety protocols such as vaccination, wearing a face covering, hand-washing and maintaining physical distance both while in school, and out in the community.
Thank you for all of your ongoing support as we continue to improve our processes and work together to keep our students, staff, families and community safe.
Rainy Day Recess
Please send your child to school with a hooded jacket or coat on days when there may be light rain. Whenever possible we will recess outdoors this year to maintain a safe distance between students of other classrooms. When the weather is severe we will move classrooms into various areas of the building for indoor play.
Stay Home If......... & COVID Hotline
If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home and call the office. With added procedures for COVID, here is the district’s current policy for sick students. If a child has any of these symptoms listed below, please contact the school office and your child will need to stay home and quarantine until they are symptom free for 24 hours AND after a COVID-19 test is negative OR quarantine for 10 days if not tested. If a student comes to school with any of these symptoms, students are brought to the office and parents are called to pick students up.

Please notify the school if your child is not feeling well. For information regarding a potential COVID exposure, please call the District COVID Hotline 503-399-9797.
We are excited to introduce ParentSquare, a new two-way communication platform that will streamline and improve communication with families and staff. It has the functions of both Remind and SchoolMessenger and will eventually replace both platforms.

It is very important that parents keep their contact information current. Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address, email or phone number.
The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated communication.

PANDEMIC FOOD BENEFITS INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES
MONTHLY MEAL MENU
Thanks to the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option, we will be able to feed all students breakfast and lunch at school for free this year.
Lunch Menus Food Services will not be printing lunch menus to send to the schools. They will post on each schools website, as well on the District website. They are having a hard time getting anything on a consistent basis and cannot depend on suppliers to have what is needed. The food chain/Supply and Demand is ever flexing.
