EDU 620: Introduction
Hello!!
Hello all! My name is Shauntel Dorsey. I am a current Pre-Kindergarten teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina and this is my 2nd year teaching. I am a 2013 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, with a Bachelors degree in Child and Family Development. My professional goals consist of creating afterschool, summer, and school programs for at risk children and families. These programs will offer opportunities for the children and the families to experience resources for bonding and development; ones at which they cannot receive because of socio-economic status. This master's program will help support my professional interests because it will be the knowledge to work with children, families, and their communities and create these opportunities for them.
In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my family, which includes my mother and father, 3 older brothers, a niece, and 3 wonderful dogs. I also enjoy spending time with my friends, crafting, cake decorating, and SHOPPING!!!! I love to travel and my favorite place to be is on a beach, walking by the shoreline!
Assistive Technology
I have learned that assistive technology is used to accommodate the needs of individuals with disabilities in everyday life. Assistive technology is defined as "any item, piece of equipment, software or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" (http://www.atia.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3859). I hope to learn more about how I can use assistive technology in the classroom and its benefits for all students.
Technology within Education
I have been impacted by the use of technology within education because I am able to be more creative when completing given tasks. Technology has introduced me to a new world of possibilities when working on projects and when teaching my students. It has been beneficial to my students because they will be able to work in technological environments and not feel shy about not knowing what to do. They are developing 21st Century Skills and are being prepared to succeed in this fast-pace, technological society. Therefore, I think it is very important to use technology in education.
