Semester Grades and Exams Update

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Westwood High School continues to place an emphasis on the learning and well-being of our students during the 2020-21 school year, and how COVID-19 has impacted teaching and learning. We understand that many students and families are struggling to navigate their way through this pandemic. As a result, WHS has made modifications to how 1st semester grades will be calculated. Below is an outline of the changes for semester 1:

1. Cumulative grading for semester 1

· Semester grades will be averaged equally (50/50) between marking period 1 and 2.

· There will not be a separate exam score counting as 20% of the semester grade.

2. Changes to 1st-semester exams

· WHS will not have traditional exams for the 1st semester of the 2020-2021 school year.

· Classes may choose to give an end of semester test/project which will be calculated into the marking period 2 grade.

In addition, we have modified our position on accepting late work and will be accepting all missing assignments from our time spent doing distance learning, for up to full credit. We will also be offering after school tutoring from 3-4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays beginning January 5 through January 14 for those students who need extra help getting caught up.

We feel these changes are in the best interest of our students. These modifications are temporary and will only apply to semester 1. If you have additional questions or concerns please feel to contact me. Thanks and here’s to a much improved 2021!
