Hawthorne Happenings
Cooperation Assertion Responsibility Empathy Self-Control
Great start to our school year!
Through the first two weeks of school, our students and staff have been working hard at getting to know each other, understanding our new school routines, and beginning to build up academic stamina. Everyone has done a tremendous job of working together and starting to really build a sense of family at Hawthorne!
Dates to remember...
September 14 - PTO meeting at 5:30 in media center
September 30 - Dental Clinic in gymnasiumOctober 1st - Dental Clinic in gymnasium
We were so excited to take our annual school picture last week! We thought the design was perfect based on our current reality - the students also looked fantastic in their new t-shirts as we celebrate 70 years of Hawthorne being open and serving the Albert Lea community!
School Hours
The school hours for Hawthorne are 8:00-2:50. We will serve breakfast for students every morning in their classroom, and they will be able to eat lunch in the cafeteria later in the day. We are asking that students arrive at school no earlier than 7:45 a.m. We are trying to eliminate the large groups of students. The playground will not be a morning option. We will send out a video next week outlining many of our new procedures given the Covid climate. So far, our students and families have done a great job of not playing on the playground or arriving to school until 7:45 which has made for a smooth arrival process for everyone involved - thank you!
Tech Tools for Parents & Students
As our Virtual Friday's for Hawthorne students begins to take place each Friday morning forward, we have created for our parents and students a variety of technology links that will help support potential questions that may come up. This is a great resource that we are proud to share with all of you! Please look through the different tabs and use what you think will benefit you the most. Teachers will also work with our students to know this resource as well.
Medical Information
Please make sure to share medical needs for your child with our Health Clerk Tanya Westrum. Any and all medications need to go through her as well. Please do not send medications on the bus with students. Medications may be brought in by the parent/guardian so we can distribute as prescribed by your doctor. Thank you!
Masks
Wearing a face mask is an expectation this fall, as they fall under Governor Walz mask mandate. Our students have done an overall fantastic job of wearing masks each day - they all seem to understand the "why" behind this new expectation and that can be attributed to all of our awesome families! We want to keep everyone healthy and safe. We will have one fabric mask and three disposable masks for your son/daughter (if needed).
Outdoor Spaces
We are fortunate to have plenty of green spaces around Hawthorne, and look forward to using these spaces for mask breaks and instruction during this fall. Your child's teacher may ask you to provide a towel for your child to sit on while outside. I know the students will enjoy being outside a bit more than usual.
Student Handbook
The Hawthorne Student Handbook is available online
Library Books or Other School Materials
We are still missing many library books or other school materials from the past school year. Please bring them or send them in when you can so we can continue to account for our materials as we move forward. Thank you!
Tips for Reading Success
Do you want to spend time with your child, build up reading skills, and help learn to love books? You can do all three when you read aloud to your child! Here are suggestions:
- Read regularly - Try to read to your child every day. You might aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day. Bring along a book, and read to him/her during a sibling's sports practice. Or curl up together with a book when you get home from work.
- Take turns choosing books - Your child may want to hear old favorites again and again. That's fine! When it's your turn to pick, add new titles and variety, such as nonfiction or poetry.
- Let them participate - Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, they can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words he/she knows. Go slowly so they have time to understand the story and look at the illustrations. They will enjoy read-aloud time more if they can plan an active role!
- Be Playful - You can use different voices for different characters (a high, squeaky voice for a mouse or a deep, booming voice for a horse). Or substitute your youngster's name for the main character's name, and use family members' names for others.
- Remember, you don't have to be an expert reader - your child will love it when you read aloud because it's you!!!
