HVMS Update - 1/19/2021
It is hard to believe we are in the second half of the 2020-2021 school year. Thank you to everyone for your continued support as we navigate these new instructional waters. The vaccination event on Friday of this week has altered our instructional schedule for the week, so please pay attention to the Important Dates section near the end of the newsletter. Hidden Valley Middle School
Gov School Application Information Regional Meetings
The Governor's School will send applications directly to 8th grade students who attend a virtual meeting. You must attend a virtual meeting to apply, and the final meeting is tonight (Tuesday, January 19) at 6:30 p.m. Teacher recommendation forms must be given to your current math teacher and your most recent science teacher.
OLSAT Testing Schedule for Governor's School and Center for Engineering
Permission forms are located in Blackboard under Organizations on the HVMS School Counseling 8 page. Forms are due back to Mrs. Childress no later than Monday, January 25th. Students will not be tested without a signed permission form.
The writing prompt for the Governor’s School will be administered on the same day the OLSAT is given once OLSAT testing has concluded. There will be a short break between testing and writing. All protocols for COVID will be followed. For the written portion, students will need their charged laptops. Please make sure they bring a power cord as well.
Students should be in the building and report to the Forum no later than 8:15 a.m. after checking in with their first block teachers for attendance. Students only applying to Engineering will conclude testing by 9:30 a.m. Students applying to Governor’s School will finish testing and the writing prompt by 11:00 a.m.

RCPSOnline Academy Health & PE 9 Spring Semester
This class will be offered spring 2021 to 8th grade students interested in enrolling in this class. It will be offered in addition to the courses they have at Hidden Valley Middle School.
RCPSOnline Academy classes differ from regular classes in several ways. Aside from the obvious lack of face-to-face time in a classroom, they are structured, paced, and scheduled using best practices for online teaching. Some of the key differences are:
- The courses are largely self-paced with deadlines set by the instructor.
- There are no set times a student must be online with the instructor.
- Students have ready access to their instructors for help, guidance, and individual attention.
- Every course is through Blackboard, our learning management system.
This is an individual course students pay tuition to take and it falls outside of their regular schedule. Registration for a supplemental course is not complete until tuition is paid in full. The drop-without-penalty date for any online course is two weeks from the beginning of the course. Students dropping an RCPSOnline Academy course after the drop date will receive a failing grade. No tuition refunds will be given after the course begins.

SOAR Card Recipients
Students can receive SOAR cards at HVMS by meeting our school-wide expectations of being safe, organized, accountable, and respectful. Our entire matrix of school-wide expectations is posted to the right. This year, we will be distributing SOAR cards to both hybrid and remote students by email, and recipients will be entered into monthly drawings for prizes. The following students have received SOAR cards since our last newsletter:
We ask that parents and students direct their technical support requests to firstname.lastname@example.org. This email account is intended to serve our students who are either online only or off campus when the request is sent. Students attending school should notify their teachers of any technical issues so that we may resolve those problems at school.
Please keep in mind that our IT support staff works regular school hours and that requests made after hours or during the weekend will not be addressed until those hours of operation.

Season 1 Sports Schedules
Middle schools in Roanoke County are still following the health metrics to determine if it is safe to start competing against other schools. Currently, the data does not support competition for any of our sports.
Football will begin out-of-season workouts in the near future. We are limited to having 10 students in each workout pod, so the number of days each group practices each week will depend on how many students are interested in participating overall. Emails were sent on Friday, January 8 to students whose names were on the interest sheet. If you did not receive an email letting you know that your student was on the football list but your student is interested in participating, please send an email to Chris Benson by 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21: email@example.com
Specific information will be sent to students regarding which days they should attend once we have a complete list of students who are interested.
