Elementary 4th Nine Weeks Grading and Completion of Final Grades
Elementary Parents, Students and Staff:
As the District has moved from in-person instruction to online learning, a number of adjustments have been made to ensure students can continue to gain crucial knowledge and skills for readiness in the next grade level. Such adjustments are a part of the guidance that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has provided to school districts.
Katy ISD has amended practices regarding grading, progress reporting, attendance and retention to align with our online learning.
Grading/Completion
Teachers will not record letter or numerical grades for assignments during the 4th nine weeks. On a weekly basis, teachers will provide students and parents informal feedback through various platforms such as Seesaw, Canvas, email, or phone calls, based on the student's progress in online learning assignments.
All students' final report cards will show "Exempt (EX)" for grades in all content areas including art, music and PE for the fourth nine-weeks grading period. Students' cumulative average will be based on the average for the first three nine weeks grading periods (i.e. GP1 + GP2 + GP3/3).
Progress Reporting
Parents will receive a narrative progress report mid-nine weeks on their student's completion of assignments. All progress reports will be emailed to parents on Friday, April 24.
Attendance
A child's completion of daily assignments serves as a record of attendance and participation in online learning as required.
Retention
Students with a failing grade after factoring averages for GP1, GP2 and GP3, will be reviewed for retention. The online learning will not be a cause for retention. In May, a Retention Review Committee meeting will be held with parents to discuss grades and progress for any student at risk of retention. For students who receive special education services, the ARD committee will serve as the Promotion/Retention Review Committee. Decisions related to retention, placement, or promotion will be completed by the last instructional day of the year.
Note: Due to the cancellation of STAAR Testing - Student Success Initiative promotion/retention requirement for 5th grade is waived for the 2019– 2020 school year.
Technology
As a reminder, if your student is in need of a device in order to complete online learning assignments at home, please contact the Technology Department using the Campus Device Check Out Form. Other Technology related questions can be directed to the Parent and Student Technology Support Center.

Student Technology Device Distribution Update
April 13, 2020 -
Katy ISD’s Technology Department has made a few changes to the Device Checkout process. Starting this week on April 15, device checkouts will be distributed on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Educational Support Complex (located at 6301 S. Stadium Lane).
Students and staff must complete a Device Check-Out Form if a device is needed, or the Parent/Student Technology Support Form if a device is not working, or is in need of repair. Individuals making such requests will receive an email from devicecheckout@katyisd.org that will indicate a designated time for device pick-up between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (If you have filled out the form but not heard back from IT, try checking your spam/junk folder for an email from devicecheckout@katyisd.org.)
Only one device is issued per family unless your campus principal determines there is a need beyond the one device. If so, it is requested that families communicate with their principal about such needs.
