SYMBOLS

What Are Symbols?

Symbols are an image or images that represent or stand for something. They are also known as emblems, tokens or signs, and have a meaning.

Often, just by looking at a symbol, you will be able to gather what it represents, the meaning of it, or understand what is trying to be said through the image. Symbols are used all over the world in many different circumstances, not just in religions.

Catholic Symbols

The most common symbol of Catholicism is the cross. It symbolises the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross so the rest of us could live eternal life, which is why the cross is so important to Catholicism.

Other symbols are alpha and omega, the crucifix, the Sacred Heart, the fish, the dove and the lamb.

What are ethics?

Ethics are moral principles that govern a person's or group's behaviour.

ethics of the roman catholic church

The Ten Commandments and Jesus' life are the foundations for Catholic moral action, which has resulted in the Church's strong social teachings. Catholics believe that acting morally means acting in accordance with the eternal laws of God.

Catholics stress intervention or Intercession by Saints and Angels, and believe in Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, and a special place called Limbo for babies. They believe in God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. They believe in the morals Mary represents as the mother of Jesus.

Ethics and morality are considered as rules more than choices, although as Catholics mature from children to adults, morality and ethics should become personal choices based on religious instruction.
