Learning in Action!
I was able to stop by Miss Sample's second hour Physical Science class on Thursday and had a great time talking to students about their energy/circuitry projects. The creativity was awesome, and I enjoyed talking to students about what they're learning in Physical Science.
Thanks for welcoming me in, Wildcats!
Basketball Season is Coming!

ATTENDANCE MEASURES
The following measures will be followed for student attendance:
1. When the student’s attendance falls below 90%, a reminder letter will be sent to the parents outlining policy
2. When the student’s attendance falls below 85%, a hotline call may be placed.
3. When the student's attendance falls below 80%, outside agencies (law enforcement, juvenile office) may be contacted.
ATTENDANCE POLICY GRADES 6-12
The Slater Board of Education, school administration, and teachers believe that the responsibility for students attending school lies jointly with the student, the parents, and the school. The following attendance policy is designed to maximize student attendance while allowing for the necessary absences from school throughout the year.
1. Parents are requested to telephone the school at 660-529-2278 by 8:30 a.m. when their child will be absent from school. If no call is received by 8:30 a.m., the office secretary will attempt to make contact with parents.
2. Students are allowed to make up all work missed during an absence unless the absence is the result of an out-of-school suspension. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete missed assignments, which are subject to individual teacher policies.
3. Juniors may request to take 3 college visits. All seniors are allowed 2 college visits. Arrangements must be made in advance through the Counselor’s office. If arrangements are not made in advance they will not be excused.
4. Field trips or any activity sponsored by the school are not considered absences from school. Students are responsible for informing teachers of their absences and obtaining assignments the day before the scheduled event.
5. For credit purposes, any student that is 25 minutes or more late for a class will be considered absent from that class.
6. Students with an attendance rate below 90% will not be allowed open lunch.
7. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours of that school day to participate in or attend any school sponsored event.
8. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours on Friday to participate in or attend any school sponsored weekend activities.

What staff member deserves a shout out?
Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM or clicking the banner above.
Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.
Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!
OLD BUSINESS
Stay in Your Lane
Students have been assigned their own chromebooks. This is the only machine you should be logged in to. (Don't use someone else's machine.)
Same Page
Students, make sure Ms. Mindy Wiseman knows when you're going on a college visit - you can email her at mwiseman@slaterschools.net.
Thanks, and happy visiting!
Learning Curve
We're learning the system and have discovered that some settings were incorrect - especially some attendance codes. As we correct those, we anticipate that parents/guardians will receive alerts regarding their student's attendance. Please be patient with us - we're working to make sure that everything is accurate, and that takes time and edits.
(Thanks for your hard work on this, Ms. Hill, Ms. Wiseman, and Mrs. Allen!)
Policy Says...
Ms. Crystal will determine if you need to stay at school or go home. If she decides that you need to go home, SHE will call your people and make arrangements for you to leave. (Read: You don't call/text your people - especially before we know you don't feel well.)
Making a List
Here's what the handbook says about GOOD STANDING:
GOOD STANDING
To be considered a student in good standing, a student must not be in violation of the
attendance policy (attendance must be above 90%), have no outstanding discipline referrals OR appear on the current F list.
In order to participate in extracurricular events including (but not limited to): dances,
field trips, school-sanctioned sports events; a student must be in good standing.
Students in grades 6-12 that are not in good standing will have closed lunch and be required
to sign in daily in the cafeteria, where they will remain for the entire lunch period.
The sign in sheet for closed lunch is on the South wall, below the bulletin board. It is up to the student to sign in and remain in the cafeteria during lunch.Failure to stay in the cafeteria for the whole lunch period or sign in (even if you stayed) will result in a CLOSED LUNCH REFERRAL. Here's what the handbook says about CLOSED LUNCH:
CLOSED LUNCH
Failing to stay or sign in for Closed Lunch
Grades 9-12
1. Warning
2. Friday School
3. 1 day in the Transition Room for each day not signed in
Stay in the Loop!
Text notifications will be used to share information about School Closures, Updates to the posted calendar, distribute newsletters, etc.
Your phone number will NOT be shared outside of the Student Information System.
How do I log in to my SIS Student Portal?
We have a new Student Information System (PowerSchool) this year, but it can do everything last year's system could do - and more - like see your schedule, grades, lunch balance, attendance, and MORE!
Where can I park?
Some students won reserved parking spots last May (see the table below), thanks to their Student of the Month achievements and Trivia Contest finishes. Those students have earned the right to paint their spots with a design that they choose (and J Clem approves).
If it’s a painted or reserved spot, don’t park there. You’ll be asked to move. If it’s an open spot, it’s first come, first served.
Spots students CAN’T park:
- The Circle Drive
- Teacher Parking (off of Elm Street, in front of the Elementary Building)
- The Cafeteria Lot
- Reserved Staff Parking in Gravel/Bus lot (South end of lot)
If you’re driving to school, you need an SHS parking pass. You can get one from Ms. Wiseman in the HS Office. They are $5/school year.
The Student Handbook has more info about Driving, Parking, and consequences of violating the rules. Check it out at SlaterSchools.net!
