A Note From our Principal

November 5, 2021

Dear North Beach Families:

Children 5-11 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Information about school-based clinics as well as how to find other locations to obtain the vaccine is available at https://www.seattleschools.org/news/flu-vaccine-clinic/. There will be a COVID-19 and flu clinic at Whitman Middle School on Sunday, November 21 and December 12, 9AM-3 PM.

We look forward to having an assembly next Friday to recognize Veterans Day. There is no school on Thursday, November 11 as we honor Americans who have served their country. To the Veterans in our community, thank you for your service.

Finally, there have been additional updates to guidelines for when to keep your child home from school, when students need to take a COVID-19 test and when they can return to school if they’ve exhibited one or more symptoms of COVID-19. The biggest change surrounds the rules for home testing. If a student has had close contact with a confirmed case, only a professionally administered test will be accepted for return. If a student is testing because of exhibiting symptoms and has had no close contact with a confirmed case, then home tests (from the districts list of approved tests) will be accepted. Information is available on this page: https://www.seattleschools.org/news/revised-quarantine-requirements/, and it might be helpful to save a copy of this flowchart for reference.

There were no COVID-19 notification letters sent out this week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Urgent Request! SPS Staffing Cuts

North Beach has been directly impacted by SPS staff cuts of Instructional Assistants. Because of these cuts we are below the required staffing ratios required for special education services and this will deeply affect some of our most vulnerable students. This also has a ripple effect potentially creating gaps in support for ALL students.

Regardless of whether you have a student receiving general education services or special education services, please consider voicing your concerns to the school district by writing a letter demanding that SPS honor their responsibility to fully support ALL our students.

If you would like to use a template and/or view example letters please see the documents on our website. (There is one template for families receiving special education services and another for families who would like to stand in solidarity.)

You may send letters and statements to: specialed@seattleschools.org or by mail to:

Seattle Public Schools

John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence

2445 3rd Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98134

We have a couple sample letters posted here:

Diwali - Festival of Lights

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year and is celebrated over five days beginning November 4th. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

On the third day of the celebratory occasion, the key rituals of the Diwali festival take place. Lighting of Diyas and candles all around the house, worshipping the Laxmi Ganesha to summon health and wealth, and bursting crackers are the chief rituals of the festival. Friends, families, and colleagues share with each other Diwali gifts as a gesture of showing love and affection. Also, a special and grand feast with delicious food that includes different varieties of sweets is the special attraction of the Diwali celebration.
