Where's the beef?
In 1906 both the Pure Food and Drug, and the Meat Inspection acts were passed. The Pure Food and Drug Act prohibited and removed any misrepresented or harmful foods from the marketplace. The Meat inspection act was passed to enforce that the meat had to be processed and packaged under sanitary conditions in order to be sold. Both of these acts were passed with the help of Upton Sinclair who wrote the novel "The Jungle".

How Was This Legal?
Many people finally realized what was wrong with child labor when Jacob Riis Published photos of children in the workplace. This exposed the conditions that the children had to work under and families who didn't know this was happening got a better understanding of what was going on. The Keating-Owen act prohibited sales of goods produced in factories that employed children, though this act didn't last long after it was deemed "unconstitutional". Many years later, the age children were allowed to work was raised, and the hours got shorter.
