CDS Middle School
Director's Newsletter
May 25th, 2018
From the Director
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week students will sit for their end of year exams. I know this can be an overwhelming time for many students. As such, I encourage everyone to find some balance this weekend. Take time to study, but also be sure to get some exercise, spend time with family and friends, and please get plenty of rest. This will go a long way in reducing stress and ensuring you have a fresh and agile mind on Monday morning.
Athletic Banquet: This week's highlight was the CDS Middle School Athletics Banquet, which took place on Thursday evening in the Phoenix Cafe. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the athletes, the coaches, the memories and accomplishments throughout the year. Over 60 MS athletes in grades 5 -8 were in attendance. Many students were recognized for their participation, unique characteristics, athletic excellence, progress, and contribution to the athletic community. It is wonderful to see our MS athletic program growing in numbers, in teams, and in school spirit each year! I'd like to extend a special thanks to our Athletics Coordinator Mr. Clem for organizing this memorable event.
MAP Testing: Most students have completed their MAP tests, but several will need to finish up on Tuesday morning 5/29. Once everyone has completed all three exams, we will send home NWEA MAP Progress Reports.
Arch Day & MS Graduation: The end of the school year is quickly approaching and we will be sharing information early next week about Arch Day and the 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony. For now, please remember that Arch Day will be a half day and school buses will depart at 11:30am.
Have a great weekend!

Library Book Return & Summer Borrowing
Dear MS students and parents,
As we count down the days to summer break, we would like to inform you about a couple of things regarding the school library.
Library Book Return
Students must return all library books, including textbooks, that they have borrowed from the library during the 2017-18 school year.
Any library items that are not returned will be considered lost and the student will be charged a replacement fee. Per school policy, report cards will be held until library items have been returned or the replacement fee has been received by the school.
2. Borrowing Books Over the Summer
The CDS Library is closed over the summer; however, we would like to offer the opportunity for students to check out books from the middle/high school library for summer reading.
Students may borrow up to 5 books to keep at home until school resumes on Thursday, August 16, 2018.
Students can come to the library to check out summer books during regular library hours until Friday, June 8, 2018, the last day of the term.
We hope many students will take advantage of the opportunity to check out books from the school library and keep reading over the summer!
Sincerely,
Ms. Linda Choo, Librarian

Grade 6 Creates Games from Scratch in Long House
What did the kids do?
The sixth graders were given the task of building a game from scratch. They spent several months working on their games. Students went through rigorous planning sessions in which they laid out the rules and objectives of their games. They then began construction on the board and game pieces. Several rounds of testing and revision were also necessary to make sure the games were easy-to-understand and sufficiently entertaining.
6Cs / ESLR Connection?
The goal of the project was to create a fun and engaging board game that incorporated one or more of the six C’s of Dalton. (Critical Thinking, Community, Character, Curiosity, Collaboration, or Communication) While creating it, they themselves utilized many of the six C’s. Students were encouraged to communicate with one another effectively in order to promote collaboration. Creativity was an essential component in the early planning stages, and critical thinking was necessary in the testing and revision phases.
How did it go?
There were a few personality conflicts and a few students who needed more practice on what it means to be a good collaborator, but overall the results were very pleasing. There were several exclaims of, “This game is so fun!” It was nice to hear after the students put in so much time and effort. Many groups felt a strong sense of pride in their accomplishments and satisfaction with the end results.
Highlights?
One group created a game called Ninjas vs. Starwars. Lego avatars were used to represent each team and the characters would move around while collecting weapons and upgrades to enhance their characters and ultimately defeat their opponents in open combat. It was an extremely creative concept and fun to watch.
- Luis Chang's game was very interesting and fostered Curiosity and Community. Students could recruit others to support them if the other team had too much advantage. :)
