Abrams Elementary School
Make it a Great Day the Abrams Way!
May 2017 Volume 4, Issue 14
National Association of Letter Carrier's Food Drive:
Saturday, May 13th
Staff Appreciation week is May 1—5. We set aside time to thank everyone on the Abrams Team for all they do to make Abrams’ a great place to learn. The cooperative efforts of our staff members make our school a special place to be. Thanks and endless appreciation to our teachers and staff for all they do.
Mark your Calendar:
Memorial Day - Monday, May 29th - No School
Flip Flops/Sandals:
Please do not send your child to school in flip flops or sandals. I understand that the weather is warmer and we want to wear those types of shoes but at school they are just not safe. While at recess it is much easier to trip and fall or to get a wood chip stuck in your shoe or toe. Thank you for understanding as we are trying to avoid injuries.
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
May is here! This is one of our busiest times of the year. Many grades are scheduled for field trips this month along with teachers doing testing, not to mention daily learning targets being taught and met. We continue to have the same expectations for behavior and learning so your support with this is appreciated. Remind your child that even with the nicer weather and some added craziness, expectations remain the same.
We took time this week to say thank you to all of our staff. Their hard work and dedication to your child's learning is amazing. We have an awesome staff that work hard day after day to help educate the kids. YEAH ABRAMS!
A week or so ago, I sent a note about sending a donation to school for a memorial for Mrs. Seizyk-Trudell. We will collect any last donations until next Friday and then we will decide what we will do. Please don't feel you have to donate, but if you chose that would be nice. If you have any questions, please contact the office.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have about your child or school.
Mrs. Michalski

Food Service Notes
A Note From Food Service…
With the end of the school year fast approaching, it’s time to keep a close eye on the balance in your child’s lunch account. All accounts must maintain a positive balance in order to make purchases through the end of the school year. Please feel free to email me at Amanda.Sonnenburg@of-ps.org with any questions, or to find out how much it will cost to get your children through the end of the school year.

Tick Season: This year's tick season is expected to bad and more widespread than previous years. With that in mind here are a few tips to avoid direct contact with ticks:
· Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
· Walk in the center of trails.
· Use repellent that contains 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin for protection that lasts several hours. Always follow product instructions. Parents should apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth.
· Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5% permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pre-treated clothing is available and may be protective longer. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an online tool to help you select the repellent that is best for you and your family.
How to Find and Remove Ticks from Your Body
· Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.
· Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. Parents should check their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and especially in their hair.
· Examine gear and pets. Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats, and day packs.
· Tumble dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on dry clothing after you come indoors. If the clothes are damp, additional time may be needed. If the clothes require washing first, hot water is recommended. Cold and medium temperature water will not kill ticks effectively. If the clothes cannot be washed in hot water, tumble dry on low heat for 90 minutes or high heat for 60 minutes. The clothes should be warm and completely dry.
How to Remove a Tick: If you find a tick attached to your skin, there's no need to panic. There are several tick removal devices on the market, but a plain set of fine-tipped tweezers will remove a tick quite effectively.
1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible.
2. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.
3. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.
4. Dispose of a live tick by submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers.
Avoid folklore remedies such as "painting" the tick with nail polish or petroleum jelly, or using heat to make the tick detach from the skin. Your goal is to remove the tick as quickly as possible–not waiting for it to detach.
Follow-up
If you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick, see your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor about your recent tick bite, when the bite occurred, and where you most likely acquired the tick.
