5 Essentials Survey

This is a reminder to participate in the parent survey, part of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey administration. We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to the identity of you or your child. School reports will only present aggregated information of how parents and students responded as a whole.

A parent survey report will only be generated if at least 20 percent of parents respond to the survey. As the feedback is essential for our district’s ongoing continuous improvement efforts, we want to make sure all voices are heard! Your responses remain anonymous and will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement.

Please help us to gather comprehensive data about our district by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ to take the parent survey. Thank you for those who have already participated--we are incredibly grateful for your time.

There will be no retake day scheduled for Spring Photos.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions can be found here.

End of 3rd Grading Period / Report Cards

The end of the 3rd grading period is Friday, March 5th. Report cards will be distributed on Friday, March 12. In-person learners will bring home a hard copy of their report card that day. Remote families will have the report card emailed directly to them on that day. A hard copy of the report card will also be sent home for remote families during their classroom's scheduled packet pickup day.

Report cards are educational wellness checks intended to provide an overview of a student's progress toward learning standards. It provides insights into a child's growth as well as opportunities for further improvement in both academic and social-emotional learning. If you have questions regarding your child's progress, please contact your child's teacher and set up a time to discuss.

District-wide Teacher's Institute March 3rd

There will be no school for students on Wednesday, March 3rd as this day is designated as a teacher's institute day. Teachers will be receiving professional development that day on standards-based assessment practices. We have long used standards-based assessment in our primary grades but we plan to shift to a standards-based approach across the board with all K-5 grades next year. This is an exciting change that will allow us to more accurately reflect what students are truly learning relative to content standards.

Digital Family Literacy Night

With all of the unique challenges that this year has brought, the five Dunlap elementary schools have decided to collaborate to bring to our families a week-long Virtual Family Literacy event. Families will have access to a website starting March 22 and ending March 26. A link to the website will be provided on March 22 and will include a variety of fun literacy and diversity themed activities with the intention that students and families will view and discuss them together when suitable for your schedule throughout the week. On the website, there will be a link to “sign-in” via Google Form. All families that sign-in will be entered into a drawing to win one of five gift cards to Barnes and Noble. (You will only sign-in one time even if you access the activities multiple times throughout the week.) On the website, there will also be Scholastic book fair links for each individual elementary school where orders placed will benefit that specific school. Book fliers will be sent home prior to the week as well. We hope that this week will provide some fun and engaging activities and resources for your family.

Erin's Law Parent Information

Dear Elementary Parent/Guardian,

In April, your child’s school counselor will be visiting classrooms to give a presentation on personal body safety. A virtual format will be provided for remote learners. This lesson is in accordance with the Illinois mandate that all schools address sexual abuse. Please take note of the mandate below.

"Erin's Law" Mandates Sexual Abuse Awareness Programs in All Illinois School

On January 24, 2013, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a new law extending sexual abuse education in Illinois schools. The Illinois law went into effect immediately and schools have to implement Erin’s Law starting the 2013-14 school year. Erin’s Law requires all schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for all students, K-12, yearly. The law also requires educators to take part in training classes that cover sexual abuse and how to recognize warning signs.

All lessons provided are considered developmentally appropriate. Resources will also be given to each student so parents can continue this important conversation at home. You may choose to opt your child out of the lesson. If you would prefer to have your child removed during this lesson, please contact your school counselor for the district opt-out form. We ask that opt-out forms be returned by March 26th so we can ensure an alternative activity is available for your student. Questions can be directed to your child’s school counselor.

Birthday Treats

During this phase of reopening, all Dunlap elementary schools are postponing birthday treats. Dunlap elementary schools are trying to limit, to the best of our ability, items being brought into school from the outside. Your child's birthday will still be recognized and celebrated within their classroom.

Parents must provide three proofs of residency (one proof from category one and two proofs from category two) and their child's certified birth certificate before access to online registration is allowed.

Upon receiving the online registration code, parents will complete the registration process online.

If you have any questions regarding online registration, please email mrohn@dunlapcusd.net or awilliams@dunlapcusd.net.

Next Year

I anticipate many of you are thinking about, and have questions about, plans for next school year. I have been thinking a lot about this as well. The district will begin planning for next school year in the spring. I anticipate our planning will involve gathering input from our parents and staff. I also know that a large part of our planning will be dependent on guidelines provided by the Illinois State Board of Education.

From a personal standpoint, I am hopeful that we are able to return to a more "normal" system of operation next year because I know our students need that. Whether or not we have a remote option next year, I simply do not know yet. We will communicate school updates as they become available. In the meantime, you can find the approved district calendar for next year in the link below as well as information regarding registration for next school year.

Registration for 2021-22 School Year

Online registration for the 2021-2022 school will open to existing families on Thursday, March 11th. Please be on the lookout on March 11th for an email that will contain your child's online registration code for the upcoming school year. If you cannot find the email in your inbox on March 11th, check your junk mailbox. On March 11th, your child's code can also be found while logged into the desktop version of PowerSchool under the Infosnap icon on the left.

Early registration plays a critical role in determining staffing needs for the next school year, so once you receive your child's online registration code, please complete the registration process.

If you have moved out of the Ridgeview attendance area and/or your child will not be returning to Ridgeview during the 2021-2022 school year, please contact the Ridgeview Office by phone 309-243-7717 or email mrohn@dunlapcusd.net.

Chromebook Tech Support for Remote Learners

The Ridgeview website has a 1:1 Technology button that will help answer the majority of parent questions regarding Canvas FAQ, Chromebook care and Google/Chromebook FAQ. Take some time to familiarize yourself with where to go to find technology assistance.

If you are experiencing any issues with your Chromebook, and cannot find the answers to your questions on any of the tabs in the 1:1 Technology button on the Ridgeview website, please contact the Dunlap IT help desk at helpdesk@dunlapstudents.net.

Classroom teachers will not be able to support any issues with technology aside from general login instructions for district platforms.

Early Entrance Policy and Procedures

Currently, Dunlap CUSD #323 is taking applications for Early Entrance to Kindergarten and First Grade. Early Kindergarten Entrance applies to a current four-year-old who will not be five by September 1, has attended a preschool program, and parent(s)/guardian(s) believe he or she may be ready for kindergarten this fall. Early Entrance to First Grade applies to students who will not be six-years-old by September 1 but will be before December 31 and have attended a private kindergarten program outside of the district. If any of these conditions apply to your student, more information and the sign-up link can be found here on the district website. Early Entrance Applications will be accepted through April 1st, 2021. Any applications received after April 1 will not be considered for the screening dates and the 2021-22 school year.

Outdoor Recess

As stated on page 10 of the Dunlap Elementary Student Handbook, Students have planned recess periods throughout the day to provide a break from the structured academic program. Since recess usually will be held outdoors, students must dress appropriately for these play periods. As a rule, all children are expected to participate in recess when the temperature is 15 degrees or above (this includes wind chill temperatures).
