Campus Behavior Information from PBIS to CPI and RTI for Bx
Tier 1 Supports
Data is "the results of measurement, usually in quantified form. Uses metrics (numbers) to describe performance."
It "helps define a problem area, assists with creation of interventions, progress monitoring, and aides in explaining to others where, when, and how much the area of concern impacts a student’s learning."
Ex. Parent conference using subjective language that sometimes includes “always”, “never”, “sometimes”, etc. vs. having a graphic display over specific incidents and surrounding variables.
Types of data include:
“ABC”
- Assists in determining function
- Gives information regarding time, setting, duration, and frequency
Frequency/Event Recording
- How often
- Definite beginning and end
- Not for high rates of behavior
Duration
- How long?
- Definite beginning and end
Interval
- Typically used from an observation from an unbiased party in the classroom
- Requires more attention and less distractions
Latency
- Length of time from directive/stimulus presented until beginning of performance
An operational definition of behavior is derived from this data.
- Observable
- Measurable
- Quantifiable
- Objective
- “It is a tool for understanding and managing behaviors in a school setting. It is an explicit definition that makes it possible for two or more disinterested observers to identify the same behavior when observed, even when it occurs in very different settings. Operational definitions of behavior are vital to defining a target behavior…”
Terms like upset, mad, immature, mean, and disrespectful do not explain what the behavior looks like. They are not effective terms for describing the behavior you see. Data must include things like ran, cried, hit, stomped, spit, made noise with his mouth, put down his head.
Data must also include what happened before the behavior as well as what happened directly after the behavior in order to determine the function of the behavior. Is the student responding to a noise, a person, a want, a need? It's important to know if the child has control over the behavior (sensory), just wants to get out of completing a task (escape or avoidance), is attempting to gain attention from adults or peers (attention maintained), or wants to gain access to something or someone (tangible) This is best collected in an ABC data sheet.
Additionally, all goals should be written based on data. When writing goals, data provides:
- The operationally defined target behavior
- The conditions (supports, accommodations, strategies, interventions)
- The desired behavior
- The criteria (where are they now and where should the goal be set?)
Behavior goals in RTI, 504 or an IEP basically follow the same formula. They should state by when (date) who (student) will do (desired target behavior written in the positive) under what conditions (location, supports, etc) at what level of proficiency (accuracy level, number of times, length of time, etc), and how measured (observation, work samples, data collection, etc).
Elementary Behavior Interventionists are available to teach you how to take data, analyze it and develop goals from it. All you have to do is ask.
PBIS Update
We are finding that an important part of a successful team is rapport. Team members need to feel like they are part of something important and have comradery with the other members. Beck Elementary is supporting this goal by naming their team and using it as a means of supporting important goals on campus in addition to behavior. #TrueBlueTribe If you are not part of one of the campus PBIS teams, but find yourself interested in being part of something very important on campus, please let me know. We are looking to fill in the gaps in grade levels on some campuses, and Beck is looking to include create and fun non-team members in the next phase of developing PBIS on campus.

RTI for Behavior Info
RTI for Behavior follows the same expectations as RTI for Academics. Data should be collected for two weeks, presented to your Behavior Interventionist for support and suggestions on interventions to increase appropriate behavior while diminishing inappropriate behavior. Once these interventions are implemented, data is collected for another two weeks, any further strategies implemented should have two weeks worth of data before the next step is taken. Once all tier one supports are in place and it is clear that a student needs tier two supports, the teacher and BI should sit down and collaborate on necessary tier two supports, put them in ESTAR as a draft, as ask the AP to schedule an RTI meeting. More information on this process as well as data collection sheets can be found at https://www.nisdtx.org/departments/student_services/student_support_services/RTI/behavior/
