Reading Olympics Will Celebrate 21 Years!
Update: In the event that all students are learning remotely, we will discuss books using Google Meet.
Mrs. Wick will communicate with students and parents and send a weekly join code through Seesaw.
The 2020-2021 Reading Olympics is right around the corner! Reading Olympics is an optional activity open to any 3rd or 4th grade student at Meadowbrook. Students who join agree to read 8 pre-selected books and meet beginning January 8th to discuss a different book each week.
We will meet on Friday mornings from 7:50-8:20 in the following locations:
Third Grade In Person - Meadowbrook School Library (Facilitators: Mrs. Huhtala, Mrs. Thibaudeau, and Mrs. Gauthier)
Fourth Grade In Person - Campus (Facilitator: Mrs. Wick)
Virtual Students - Google Meet
Students in all three locations will join one Google Meet for the weekly discussions. A new Google Meet code will be shared weekly with students in our Reading Olympics Seesaw course.
If we experience a two-hour delay or school cancellation, Reading Olympics will be canceled for that Friday.
After discussing all 8 books, we hold three book challenges. At that time, we will divide into teams. Each team will be asked questions about the books and can answer as a group.
The list of books that you will need to read is included here. You need to read all eight of the books to qualify for a team. Upon completing each book, you will also need to complete a page in your Reading Olympics Journal. Please print a journal page for each book. The journal will help you log your reading and assist you in recalling the details of all the books that you read when it comes time for our discussions. This will be a good study guide to assist you in preparing for the book challenges we will have in December.
If you would like to participate, please complete the participation agreement form found here by December 11th . All students who participate in this event by reading the books, completing the journal, attending the morning discussions, and competing in the challenges will receive a reading award and be entitled to attend the reading celebration at the end of the program.
We are very excited about this program and hope you consider participating. The books are available in print, eBook and/or audio format in our school library, as well as, Brown County Library. Books in the school library are on a first come, first serve basis. Because of this, we encourage you to begin reading the books as soon as possible, rather than waiting to read them the week before the scheduled discussion.
Please contact Mrs. Wick at 920.662.5091 or michwick@hssdschools.org if you have any questions about Reading Olympics.
Looking forward to reading and enjoying books together,
Mrs. Wick - Library/Technology Integration Specialist
Mrs. Huhtala - Literacy Specialist
Mrs. Thibaudeau - Literacy Interventionist
Mrs. Gauthier - GT Specialist

2020-2021 Howard-Suamico School District Budget
During our annual meeting September 28, community members received a detailed review of the school district’s 2020-2021 budget and voted to adopt it as presented. During the meeting on October 26, the Board of Education approved a total tax levy of $30,375,445, which supports a district budget of $91,000,528.
This levy will result in the school’s portion of our property taxes remaining stable at $9.19. The budget, just as in year’s past, establishes that we continue to value innovation, investing in our staff, driving academic performance for every student, and fiscal stability.
Board members have engaged in continuous legislative advocacy efforts, specifically pertaining to the State’s biennium budget, which positively impacted the students of the Howard-Suamico School District. The advocacy efforts have recently led to partnerships with local municipalities utilizing federal grant dollars to purchase electrostatic sprayers, cafeteria tables with benches, expanded WiFi at Meadowbrook and Suamico Elementary, and MERV air filters.
Over the next few months Board members will continue to review the budget and plan strategically for the future. Another survey will be sent out later this year to gather additional information as referendum planning continues.
