ADVOCACY • LEADERSHIP • COLLABORATION
KEEP ADVOCATING! Reach out to your local legislators to promote school libraries and emphasize the impact the library program has for ALL students. Write, call, email, Tweet, shake hands, meet for coffee - whatever it takes to get the ear of your legislators:
- Increase library enhancement funds
- Strengthen the librarians role in fostering literacy within a school
- Instructional partnerships between librarians and classroom teachers to benefit all students
Alabama School Library Association (ASLA) is conducting a Professional Learning Survey to help shape professional learning for Library Media.
Take this quick survey to provide insight in to how both the ALSDE and ASLA can provide equitable, accessible, and most importantly practical and applicable professional learning for YOU!

This workshop is designed to help those who repair books as well as those who make the decision about what to repair.
Session 1 will begin with an in-depth discussion about how to determine which books are repaired, sent out to bindery, replaced, or withdrawn. It will be led by Jennifer Williams from Athens State University, Kares Library. Jennifer will guide attendees through the decision making process to help us arrive at the best solution for each individual book.
Session 2 is a book repair demonstration led by Greg Schmidt of Auburn University Libraries. Greg will demonstrate repairing several of the common issues for library books including: tipping in pages, damaged spines, torn pages, wet books, dirty books.
Session 3 is hands-on practice. Everyone is invited to bring a couple of books to repair. The afternoon will be spent participating in guided hands-on repair. After all, experience is the best teacher.

NewseumED: Fantastic First Amendment Opportunities for Students
NewseumED: Scholarship Opportunity
Encourage your students to apply for a chance to represent THEIR state at a prestigious high school journalism conference in our nation’s capital next summer.
Each year, one high school junior from every state and the District of Columbia is selected to attend the (all-expenses-paid) Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C. Conference dates for 2020 are June 19-24.
Sponsored by the Freedom Forum in honor of the late Al Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY, the Newseum and the Freedom Forum, the goal of the program is to encourage free-spirited students to pursue a career in journalism and to emphasize the importance of the First Amendment in a democracy. Each student is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice.
Additional information about the program — and its online application — can be found at www.freespirit.org. The deadline to apply is Saturday, Feb. 1. Questions? Contact Karen Catone at kcatone@freedomforum.org or 202/292-6271.

NewseumED: Resource of the Month: ‘Am I Being Fair?’ Lesson Plan
In newsrooms, if someone has too strong a connection to a story, they are said to have a conflict of interest. Their personal bias disqualifies them from covering the story. A video and graphic introduce four proven strategies students can use to counter their own bias when surfing online or conducting research; then students practice using these strategies when investigating a real-life issue. Find the full lesson plan here.
