Each week administrators and instructional coaches will highlight the growth in the instructional practices, creativity, purposeful and meaningful practices that promote student success. It is important that we recognize ALL the Excellence in Teaching we have in all of areas of our academic programs. The highlights are on a rotation throughout the year and each content/department will be the focus for the week.
Reading across the Curriculum- Ms Powell
"Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives." -- Richard Vaca, author of Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum
The days of believing that we could hand informational text or a novel to a student and assume he or she makes full meaning of it on their own is a teaching mode of the past. Whether we like it or not, regardless of the content we teach, we are all reading instructors.
Keeping this thought process in mind, the Social Studies and ELAR Departments met together to discuss ways in which we could incorporate the same reading texts in both classes. We looked at Tier I, II, and III vocabulary words and tried to write higher level text dependent questions. We also discussed the what knowledge and skills are expected from a student reading a text in Social Studies vs ELAR.
Ms. Powell jumped into teaching from these reading passages right away. She began her class with her overview of the Soviet Union and a discussion on Cultural Fusion. She then introduced a reading passage about the Soviet Union from the website “Newsela”. She has students using the same reading and annotation strategies they use in their ELAR classes. She checked for understanding and stressed the vocabulary and concepts integral to her own class.
Good job Ms. Powell in incorporating literacy instruction into your World Cultures class.
