Ginger Foglesong Guy
  • Ginger grew up living in many different countries: Mexico, Switzerland, Arizona, Costa Rica, and Virginia.
  • Reading was very important to her family and they took their books where ever they went.
  • She learned to speak Spanish at a very young age.
  • She was a first grade teacher when she became inspired by her students' love for a good story, which is why she began writing her own books.
  • Because of her background in Spanish she wrote her books in both Spanish and English to help children to read and speak in another language.

Vivi Escriva

  • Vivi uses watercolors to illustrate the pages of the books.

About the Story

Let's follow a boy and his family travel to his grandma's house. The boy and his family will use many different forms of transportation to get to his grandmother's house.The children will want to keep reading to see what type of transportation the boy and his family will go on next. Each page has the English and Spanish words to use bilingual vocabulary. The pages are beautifully painted with bright colors using watercolors.

Objective:

The student will describe familiar people, places, things, or events while reading the text.


  • The class will read the book together.

  • On each page of the book, the teacher will ask the students if anything is familiar to them.

  • The teacher will ask if they have ever see what is on the page, or done what is on the page.

  • The teacher will ask the students the explain to the class a trip they have taken before, and how they got there.


Criteria:

1. This book demonstrates unique language and style. This text fits this criteria because it has the words in English and in Spanish.

2. The book has an appealing format and is of endearing quality. This book fits this criteria because it has big illustrations with few words, and is very high quality.

3. The book includes members of a "minority" group for a purpose other than filling a "quota". This book meets this criteria because it is about a Hispanic family.
