Dec. 12-16 Newsletter
This was a great week to be an Admiral!
To our families who are celebrating the start of Hannukah on Sunday, we wish you a special celebration. Shalom greetings to you! (Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace, harmony, prosperity, tranquility & welfare.)
Third-grade students went on their STEM Skate field trip where they participated in a STEM lesson on speed and friction before having some skating fun out on the rink! The kids AND teachers had a blast learning from the STEM activities and racing around the rink.
York talents were on display this week with our preschool holiday performance and middle school band concert. Mr. Lambert did a phenomenal job getting our inaugural band performance together - the students sounded great and took such pride in their concert. Our littlest Admirals, under the direction of the VPK teachers Mrs. Lankford and Ms. Cawood, put on an adorable performance that had everyone smiling.
Our STEM Coordinator, Mr. Turner, along with students from Mr. Butler's class, built three grow boxes on campus. All of York's students will now have the opportunity to explore agricultural "long term investigations" and tend to our plants/crops that will soon be planted by volunteer classes.
- The York Student Council will be selling Candy-grams to raise funds for the middle school. Students can purchase a candy cane before school and write a message to be delivered to someone special. Different colored candy canes will represent something different: Green is for a friend, Red/White is for that "someone special", Red is for your "bestie." The cost of the candy canes will be $1 with sales running until 12/21/22. All candy-grams will be delivered the morning on December 23rd.
- Student Government is sponsoring a CAN-struction canned food drive for a York service action project. Please turn in cans by December 20th. Students will be using the donated cans as part of a STEM building challenge on December 21st prior to donating them to a food bank to help those in need. Stay tuned for pictures of our CAN-struction STEM challenge displays!
- Intramural Track is starting soon for 5th, 6th & 7th grade students. Please click the link below to sign up by December 21st.

If you have friends or neighbors still thinking of joining our York family, please remind them to submit their application to the Choice Office this evening. Reminder, if your students are currently enrolled they are set to remain at York through grade 8, no additional applications are needed. Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Whalen, the Magnet Lead Teacher, by emailing brooke.whalen@hcps.net.
Reminder that parents should be utilizing the car line for morning arrivals. Please do not park in front of the office as those spots are needed for visitors/office staff, and students crossing the car line to enter the building is a safety concern.
There will not be any Early Release days until January 23.

Admiral on Deck: Mrs. Oliver
Ahoy Admirals. I'm Mrs. Oliver and I'm thrilled to be setting sail with the inaugural class of Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy. I am a military brat who attended eight schools in seven states as a kid. In my fifteen years with the district, I've taught all grades of middle school Language Arts and Journalism. I'm passionate about helping students learn the skills to be successful readers, writers, and thinkers so they can follow their interests wherever life takes them. In my free time I enjoy reading, photography, and being outdoors.
