Flowery Flyer
Week of 2/15/16
Weekly Recap
I hope Friday's staff development day went well for everyone and you had a super three-day weekend! I learned a lot working with 3rd grade on Friday and appreciated looking at student work. Thanks to all Valentine's Day potluck contributors. It was a yummy lunch!
Updates
Talent Show: Please send home the Talent Show flyer to all students in grades 1-5 on Tuesday, 2/16. Auditions will be held on 2/24 at 1:15. Flyers are in your boxes and ready to go. Info is also being advertised in weekly parent email and Facebook.
Yard Supervision: In order to make sure all areas of the playground are covered, I have assigned each person on duty a specific area. Here are some reminders about active supervision in large census lightly staffed areas like recess as outlined by BEST (Building Effective Schools Together).
1. Movement-constantly move in the area you are assigned to be sure you are observing all student activity.
2. Scanning-constantly scan the play area and pay attention to noise like whining, crying, aggression, etc.
3. Positive contact-this is a great time to positively connect with high 5's, greeting kids, smiles, etc.
4. Positive reinforcement: "Great job being safe on the big toy by taking turns on the monkey bars. It makes for a fun recess when we all follow the rules."
5. Instructional responses to problem behavior-"I noticed you went down on your tummy on the slide. What's the rule for the slide? Please show me how we safely down the slide."
While I know recess can be a good time to find someone and ask a question, please refrain from long conversations that take you away from the supervision of the students. I am the first one that needs to work on this! Thanks for your attention to these important safety reminders!
