*Scholastic Book Order Code: JQ8XW under Miss Thomas still

The 6th graders are figuring out how junior high works and they seem to enjoy it so far. We have already started lit. circle groups, where they read a book with a group and have a discussion about the book on Friday. Week 2 is due next Friday. Check in to make sure they are reading. I do give them a few minutes in class almost every day.

We also had our first spelling unit and test this week. Spelling procedures were explained in class. They take a pretest Monday and whatever words they spelled incorrectly on Monday, they take on Friday. They have a spelling packet that they work on throughout the week.

I have lots of book order forms if anyone is interested in ordering books. You can order online at https://clubs.scholastic.com/. Our class code is JQ8XW and it’s under my maiden name Miss Thomas. Have a great weekend!

I think the sixth graders are settling into their routines and have their locker combinations down! Way to go!

In Math this week we began talking about Integers: Opposites, Comparing and Ordering and Absolute Value. The students have access to their online textbooks. Have them show you all the neat resources available on it. We already finished up our first Module this week. We played a fun review game on the Chromebooks called “Kahoot!” and took the Module 1 Quiz on Friday.

Next week we will move into Module 2: Factors and Multiples. We will learn the divisibility rules, try the Sieve of Eratosthenes, and solve for the GCF and LCM.

Have a great weekend!

In sixth grade social studies we began looking at the first Americans. Students learned to access their online books and we spent some time exploring Google documents and slides on their Chromebooks. We explored new vocabulary and looked at the theories of early archaeologists. Students learned about the ice age and the resulting land bridge (Beringia) that formed between Asia and North America. Next week we will examine some of the specific early civilizations such as the Aztec, Inca, Olmec, and Mayan. Please sign and return the parent letter with your son or daughter. Have a great weekend.
