First
First grade went to the Marine Science Center in February. It was a great field trip and the students learned about rehabilitating sick and injured sea turtles. Students enjoyed touching the sting rays in the touch tank and learning about Bubba, a recovering owl.
Grade
As we zoom towards the end of the school year, it is very important for your child to complete his /her homework each night. Reading and practicing sight words is vital for improving fluency and comprehension skills.
If you have questions or concerns about your student’s progress, contact his or her teacher to schedule a conference. Your support can not be replaced!
News
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood kicked off “Read Across America” week by reading “Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss to our first graders in the media center. First grade focused on a week of fun reading and extension activities with Dr. Seuss books including “Fox in Socks”, “Wacky Wednesday”, and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go”. Thank you, Sheriff Chitwood!
Second Grade
Math- We are finishing learning various strategies to subtract three-digit numbers and moving ahead to measurement. We will focus on appropriate tools to measure to the nearest measurements like centimeters, inches, feet, yards, and meters.
Science- Force was our last unit with life cycles for plants and animals coming up.
Social studies and reading have crossed over with resources about citizenship and helping the community. We also studied some great African American inventors to compare and contrast.
Second Grade March Math Bee Winners
Giordani Colon first place and Mallory Collins second place.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade just went to their St. Augustine field trip. Students were able to experience first hand of what life was like during the time of the Indians. They saw how they cooked meals, how they lived and even how tools were made. We hope all students who were able to attend learned a lot and had fun.
Currently fourth grade students are working on decimals and fractions. Students are required to know how to convert tenths to hundredths and vice versa. They also need to know how to change the fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. In Science, we are just about to end our topic of Energy and move into plants. This is a fun and hands on topic. Students will grow their own seeds and get to see up close and personal how a new seed is actually made and the process of it. Students will also know how seed dispersal works by doing a sock experiment to collect seeds around campus. These two topics will take us all the way to Spring Break. When students return, we will move into Measurement and Animals.
Just a friendly reminder, FSA is around the corner. The FSA writing is April 1, Reading is May 5-6 and Math is May 7-8. Please encourage your student to continue practicing skills that haven't been taught in a while. For example, adding and subtracting, rounding, place value and multiplication. Zearn, IXL and successmaker are great resources students can be using to practice these skills at home!
