Timberwolf Times
Volume 5, Issue 29 -March 5th, 2023
A Message from Dr. Lowry
Timberwolf Family,
On a GREAT note, our WCJH Choir program exceeded expectations at UIL this past week and all choirs received SWEEPSTAKES! This is the highest and most prestigious award a choir can receive at UIL. Congratulations to our directors and students who worked extremely hard to make this happen!
As for athletics, our track and field teams are continuing to represent our school with great sportsmanship, and competitiveness in their events. You can see the boys and girls track schedule below. If you have time this week, come check out our athletes and watch them compete.
This week at WoodCreek Junior High School we will be hosting our Book Fair during English classes. Please remind your students to check out the Library March 6th-10th.
This Friday, March 10th, our WCJH PTA will be hosting Fun Food Friday. Don't forget to PRE-ORDER your student's meal! Additionally, our PTA will also be hosting several SPIRIT NIGHTS/DAYS during the week and over Spring Break, so check out the flyers below and show your support to our WCJH PTA.
Lastly, 8th Grade Celebration/Dance is approaching quickly, and tickets are on sale now. Please make sure you purchase your tickets before the prices go up.
Our next Timberwolf Times will be sent out on Sunday, March 19th. I hope everyone enjoys their spring break and stays safe, March 13th – 17th.
Have a great week and GO TIMBERWOLVES!

2022-2023 STAAR Testing
As required by House Bill 3261, STAAR will be administered online beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The STAAR online testing platform offers all students multiple online tools to support the testing process. In addition, the STAAR assessments no longer have a time limit. Students are expected to complete STAAR tests in about three hours; however, any student who needs additional time may continue testing until the end of the school day.
To support students with the online testing transition, the district began online testing implementation in the 2021-2022 school year for all STAAR tested grade levels. Students will continue to be provided multiple opportunities to experience online testing platforms through District Learning Assessments (DLAs), STAAR Interims for specific subjects, and STAAR practice tests. Parents are encouraged to access the Practice Tests Login located on the Texas Assessment website to explore practice tests. Practice Tests Login is found under the section How to Help Prepare Your Child.
STAAR testing dates are posted on the Department of Research, Assessment, and Accountability website. For questions regarding local and state assessments, contact our Campus Testing Coordinator, Mrs. Kodi Holmes (kodilholmes@katyisd.org).

HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, ABUSE, AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION INSTRUCTION
In accordance with Texas Education Code 28.004 and Senate Bill 9, students enrolled in junior high physical education (PE) or Athletics will receive instruction in Human Growth and Development. Topics will include the physical changes resulting from puberty, as well as personal hygiene, abuse, abstinence, and prevention of communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Katy ISD junior high school counselors will teach the required health TEKS specific to abuse and violence prevention.
The purpose of the curriculum is to provide students with information about how to deal with the challenges of early adolescence and to supplement the efforts of parents as they educate and support their teens.
Under Texas statute, parents must choose to “opt-in” their child to participate in the lessons that address human growth and development, abuse, and violence prevention. Beginning on March 27 through April 6, parents may elect to opt-in their child to participate in the lessons via an electronic link provided by the District.
Below is the opt-in window as well as the time frame when lessons will be taught:
- Parent Opt-In Window - March 27 - April 6
- Instruction Window - May 1 - May 19
All lessons are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and meet the requirements that are mandated by the state. Parents have the right to review the curriculum materials on each individual campus by request.
This content is intended to initiate conversations between you and your child about the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during adolescence. In addition, awareness and education on abuse and violence are key to prevention and intervention. It is a priority for Katy ISD to partner with our families and community to create a safety net for our students.
