La Mesa 6th Grade Information

April 20, 2020

Hello Future La Mesa Families,

Por favor, desplácese hacia abajo para seleccionar español.

We hope all of you are healthy and safe at home and are doing well with distance learning. We are certainly sad that our tradition 6th grade orientation was not able to happen this year. We are hopeful to have an event to welcome you this summer before the start of school.

We also encourage you to explore our website to learn more about La Mesa.

Electives and Exploratory Courses at La Mesa

Students can apply for the following electives:

ASB (Associated Student Body) is our student government. Students in this class are considered leaders in our school. They plan spirit building events and activities like dances and lunch time events to engage and connect students. Participation in this class does require time out of the school day, but it generally meets once per day during their elective period. Students are also given opportunities to advise the principal and staff on school policies and rules.

The La Mesa yearbook staff produces our yearbook each year. They take photos, learn layout and write the copy that is seen on each page. Students in this class should be self driven and be able to adhere to deadlines.

La Mesa Live is our LIVE daily news show that is student produced and aired live each day. Students in this class learn to be in front or the camera and behind the camera. They produce segments that air on the live broadcast. Students may need to attend school events outside the school day to produce segments on school activities. Students may also need to arrive early to school to pre-prep for production that day.

Students who need extra support in math will be assigned to Power Math during their elective period. Some students with IEPs may be assigned a study skills class in place of their elective period.

All other students will be assigned randomly to an exploratory class. These classes include:

Art, Culinary, Teen Leadership, American Sign Language, or Drama. These courses may change as a result of final staffing at La Mesa.

Personal Device Policy (aka cell phone policy)

Our Personal Device Policy was a success this year. Students adjusted wonderfully. Although many would choose to use their device at school if given the choice, students state that they are more social, have more friends, and are more focused during class. They also say there is less drama (there is still some drama - it is junior high after all).

Cell phones are not "banned" at La Mesa. They must simply have them in their backpack off (they may also do airplane mode) once they enter the gate. They can access them again at the end of the school day after they exit the gates.

The device policy can be viewed HERE for English and HERE for Spanish.

We also have a FAQ that may answer questions you may have. Access the FAQ HERE.

Student ID Cards at La Mesa

At Summer Check-in, all students will be issued a 20-21 La Mesa School ID Card and a lanyard. All students are expected to wear their ID card on a lanyard while on campus. IDs are checked as students enter campus. We also will be having a tutorial time twice a week before lunch on Tuesdays and Thursday. Students will need their ID to be checked into the classroom to which they are assigned (for intervention) or choose (for enrichment). Also, in the case of an emergency such as a lock down during a non-instructional time, teachers will be scanning IDs to quickly create a list so we know where students are on campus.

If an ID card is lost or destroyed, it can be replaced in the main office for $5.

2020-21 William S. Hart District Calendar

It is never too early to plan ahead. Regular attendance is a huge part of success in Junior High. What they miss cannot be adequately made up with a packet. Please plan your family vacations using the district calendar which you can access HERE. Vacation dates differ somewhat from what you may be used to at the elementary school districts.

A more detailed La Mesa calendar will be made available to you in the summer mailer.

Please note that each day classes begin at 8:45 am and students are released at 3:10 pm. On Wednesdays, students are released at 2:05 for teacher collaboration. We provide supervision starting at 8:00 am and ending at 4:00 pm. Students may not be on campus outside those hours unless they are there for a supervised activity.
