What Do Physicists Do?

Physicists are responsible for studying the universe and observing how mass and energy interact. They study the origins of the universe and use findings to try to develop new possible sources of energy. Physicists may also develop new military technologies and monitor the trajectories of satellites.

Work Environment

Most physicists will spend their days in their offices, whether it be in a university or a more likely privately owned complex. This is where they will spend most of their time theorizing new ideas, or interpreting old theories. Once they find something that intrigues them, they can experiment in medium sized to smaller laboratories.

Days And Hours

Physicists are devoted workers to their occupations. They will often be required to work holidays and/or weekends, but are not always instructed to. The average weekly hours can range anywhere from 37 - 40 hours a week.


Physicists' pays can vary depending on your education and placement. Working at universities corresponds the lowest pay, while working at hospital levels offers the highest pay. The median wage (as of 2012) was $106,360 per year, or $51.14 per hour. The lowest pays were below $57,640 per year, the highest ranged around $176,630 per year.

Education Required

The best way to assure a position before-hand is to take as many classes you can. The most opportune method may be to score well on your SAT's to secure an acceptance into a good college. Most places will require an Associates Degree or Docorate, while a university placement may require post-doctorate degrees.

The Best Characteristics

A physicist is someone who is in deep interest with science. They have to be devoted and adventurous with their studies. They have to be open to new things and open to new ideas. If someone is really interested in such a field, they will gladly take on the hours to go onto their own individual ideas and to share and experiment with them.


The best advice can come only with someone who accepts the suitable characteristics. The best thing to do would be to find role models to look up to and courses to look into. The best plan is to get as much experience and familiarity with physics, and your field, as possible.
