EARLY RELEASE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18th

Students will be released at 12:45 for Winter Break.

PTA Sponsored Penguin Patch

The holiday season is upon us and the PVE PTA is sponsoring the Penguin Patch Holiday Shoppe from December 15-17th. It is an exciting program that allows your student to shop for special gifts for family members without anyone knowing what it is until your gift exchange. In the next few days, there will be a letter and budget envelopes coming home. The gift prices range from $0.25 up to $13.00. Most of the gifts are between $1 and $5. The Shoppe will be open before school and during the day for classes to come in and shop. We will have a special family night that will be on Wednesday, December 16th from 5:30-7:30 pm so that siblings and other family members will be able to buy gifts.

Holiday Spirit Week

· Monday: Red and Green Day

· Tuesday: Holiday Hat Day-- Wear your favorite holiday hat!

· Wednesday: Holiday Sweatshirt/T-Shirt Day

· Thursday: Snow Day-- Wear white, snowmen attire, and scarves!

· Friday: PVE Spirit Day

Math

We have been focusing on long division with 2-digit divisors and dividing decimals by whole numbers. The plan is to have our unit test on Thursday, December 17.

Reading

We have finished our Number the Stars novel study. Throughout this study we focused on themes, symbolism, compare and contrast, using the text to connect to the world around us, and much more. This week they have prepared for their final test over these skills. Students are expected to have their test done no later than Friday, December 18. They are only able to work on it at school.

Reader Response - We have been working a lot on writing about what we are reading. Students have a google doc on their Reading Google Classroom page where they have been keeping a running log of their reader response entries. The expectation is to have one entry for each time that they read silently with a book of their choice. So far, students are doing wonderful with this.

Writing

Their independent study project is going fabulous!!! Students are working SO hard and doing such a fantastic job. They are working to complete their final draft for their first report. Feel free to look over this with them at home, if you want :) The goal is for them to have THEIR words and voice in their writing. So, as long as it is just helping with the basics of capitalization, punctuation, formatting, and the all around flow of their writing, I am absolutely fine with you helping out.

Unless they do not get their final draft of report 1 finished, there will be no required work over the holiday break! Relax! :)

SCIENCE

We have been studying Ecosystems in our Science unit. Our units main focus is the flow of energy through an ecosystem and specifically Food Chains.

Your child may have mentioned that they have a project due over an Biome/Ecosystem of their choice. They were given a green sheet with instructions on what to include in their project. I am asking that they get creative with this project, but please do not feel that you have to go out of your way and purchase materials. I encouraged them to use what they already have around the house. There is a link on the back of the green page to a website that has a lot of great examples of projects.

Their topic is due to me on Tuesday, December 15.

The Final project is due after winter break on Wednesday, January 6.
