SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO BE RESPECTFUL'
These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:
Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).
These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.
This term we are focusing on being 'respectful'.
TE REO FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O
A massive thanks to the leadership team here at Vogeltown who kept the school running smoothly whilst I was off sick with Covid. It was a timely reminder that we need to look after ourselves and if we do get it, to keep away from others to stop the spread.
Sickness has certainly been top of the agenda this week at Vogeltown. We had 115 learners away on Tuesday, 105 learners away yesterday and about 80 learners away today - only 2 of these absences were for covid, the rest were a flu or colds. A big thanks to our parents/caregivers for keeping your child(ren) home to help stop the spread - we appreciate this.
As a result of the sickness situation, we have decided to delay our sports exchange with Woodleigh School. This was suppose to be next Monday, we have pushed this out to Wednesday 6th July and will now be held at Vogeltown.
We are getting close to having an official opening of our new deck area at the senior area. Today, for the first time in 6 months, we had no fences out the front of the senior school! This area is amazing and adds to the outdoor environment, with the ability to be a 'breakout space' for our learners - we are really happy with how it is coming together (see the photos below). Next term we move on to the Junior school inside upgrades!
Next week we have our 4th Board of Trustees meeting for the year. For anyone interested in being on the Vogeltown Board, then this is a great way to see if this is what you may be interested in. The meeting is being held in the Senior side staffroom at 6.30pm. If anybody is keen to come along and see how this team operate, how decisions for the school are made, and how we act on feedback from staff, then come along to this meeting - we will even make you a coffee! (See the link below if you are really keen too, it may answer some questions).
In the last week of term you will receive your child(ren)s Progress report for Term 2. This is the same report you received in term 1, updated with the progress they have made over Term 2. In week 2 of Term 3 we will have learning conferences to discuss the Term 2 report/progress and set goals for Term 3. The link to book these conferences will be in the first newsletter of Term 3. Note: Rom 8 will have their Learning Conferences in the last week of this term as Miss Fleming is leaving. These will be done with the new teacher in Room 8, Miss Celeste McLean. Please book on the 'Skool Loop' app.
Please enjoy the long weekend. This is the first time we have had a Matariki holiday - so we are witnessing history in New Zealand tomorrow. Enjoy the extra day with whanau and celebrate what Matariki is all about - It is an opportunity for all people of Aotearoa to come together and reflect on the tau that has passed, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.
Nga mihi nui Vogeltown whanau,
Mr O and the VS team
SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS 2022
DAD'S AND DAUGHTERS BREAKFAST & MATARIKI 2022
We had an awesome breakfast this morning for all our 'Dads and Daughters'. A big thanks to everyone for making the effort to come to this awesome event - we really enjoy hosting!
A big thanks to the New Plymouth Police and the Taranaki Rugby Union for their support again - we enjoy having this team support this annual event!
A massive thanks to our Vogeltown Staff who were at school from 6am this morning to get this event ready - cooking the eggs, serving the food, tidying up and being wonderful hosts! Tu Meke VS whanau - we really do have an amazing family of teachers and support staff at Vogeltown School!
LETS GO - 'Caught being good day'
Well done to all our learners who made the effort to walk, run, scooter, skateboard, hop, jump to school. Every learner who made the effort was rewarded with a prize from the 'magic bag of tricks' supplied by the Lets Go team at the NPDC.
Well done to our Class reps who were leading this day - it was a cold, windy day, but the vibe at the front gates was awesome - we even had a couple of Pukeko's hanging around!
JUNIOR SCHOOL DRIVEWAY PLANTING - MATARIKI
As part of our Matariki celebrations, we planted new native trees along the Junior school driveway.
In 2021 we had to take down all the trees along the driveway to get the new classroom in to the school. Some of the trees had already come to the end of their lifespan, but unfortunately this driveway has never looked the same since.
Today that all changed. We have planted 10 native trees - all of which are different. We received 4 trees donated by Bill Clarkson and we bought 6 trees in April last year, from Atawhai nurseries.
The driveway already looks different! We can not wait to watch these trees grow and mature. Each junior class helped plant 2 trees - they are now in charge of 'their trees' and they will be able to tell you all about them.
Big thanks to our class reps - Kaiau McLeod, Cooper Scott, Libby Wells, Kaitlin Taylor, Khloe Briscoe and Pearce Donnelly who helped the juniors plant the trees and sing the Matariki song with each class!
RIPPA RUGBY 2022
Unfortunately we had to make this Rippa Rugby tournament this year only for the A grade team - this was due to absences and the howling southerly on Tuesday.
Our team played really well and were just 'pipped' in the pool play to finish 4th! They did an amazing job and played really well! Tu Meke, team!
COVID-19 UPDATE AT VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - WEEK 8, TERM 2
As I mentioned, above we have been hit really hard by the winter bugs again this week. Lots of kids away with the usual colds and coughs. If your child is unwell please keep them home from school - we have had to send a lot of kids home this week. Thanks for your support in this - we want to stop the spread of all viruses and colds, not just covid.
Our current average attendance for this term is 85.6%. This week the average attendance has been 66% - which is a sign that there is a lot of illness and flu in the community.
Please remember we are still in a pandemic and we must continue to keep being vigilant with hand washing and keeping safe.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEAM!
MR O'S FRIENDLY REMINDERS
1) Please remember to contact the school office if your child is absent or going to be late. You can report absences via Skool Loop, text 021 753 680 or ph 06 753 6843. Please do not use SeeSaw for student absences - these must come through the office.
2) Please be courteous before and after school with parking around the school sites. We have lots of kids and not enough parks, so please allow time to get to school and be patient around the streets.
Thanks whanau
Stay safe and be kind to each other. Thank you for the ongoing support of Vogeltown School, we appreciate the community we live in.
On behalf of the Vogeltown team,
Ka kite ano
