The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Growing Up
Essential Question: How can you help out at home?
Next week our class will be reading stories about how children can help at home. Children will learn about taking responsibility for cleaning, caring for a pet, doing errands, and other chores.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
Vocabulary: chores, contribute
Discuss different ways your child can help out at home. Create a list of jobs on a chore chart.
My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: help, too
Write the words help and too, and ask your child to write each word. Think of sentences that use both words. Write the sentences down and read them aloud. Have your child underline the words help and too.
Category Words: Household Furniture
Play a game of “Simon Says.” Use household furniture terms as you give commands to act out chores.
Phonics: long a
Invite your child to play a rhyming game with words that have the long a sound. Guide your child in writing and sounding out the rhyming words.
The One Hundred Club
I am so happy to report that every single KinderKid is now able to count to 100! Never have I had a class be able to pull this off so early in the school year. Thank you to those of you who've been practicing at home with your child. Now... how's that shoe tying coming along. :-)
Snack Calendars
Participation in our snack program is severely waning. Unfortunately, there are many days that snack was not brought in. This is very disappointing for the KinderKids. Before I make out the April calendar, please let me know if you wish to have your child's name from the list.
The Iditarod: We Have A Champion
Mitch Seavey has become the oldest and fastest Iditarod champion. This will make Matthew Perry happy, as this is the musher he's been following since December. Interestingly, Mr. Seavey's son (and defending Iditarod champion), Dallas, came in second. There are still many mushers out on the trail, so our following is not over. We will, of course, want to celebrate the Red Lantern recipient. This award is given to the last finisher for showing the LifeSkill of perseverance. This has been absolutely amazing for me to experience alongside the KinderKids, who've been so engaged in this authentic learning.
Report Cards
Please look for your child's report card in today's Friday folder. There are a couple of things you'll need to remember. If something isn't marked, then it simply has not been assessed yet. There are, however, exceptions to this. We have been through all letters and sounds and numbers 0-20 (identifying, matching sets, and writing), so if an item has not yet been marked with an X, then your child was not successful with this task and will need extra practice until it is mastered.
Please sign only the envelope and return. The report card itself is yours to keep. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have questions or concerns about your child's progress thus far.
Liberty Elementary School Kindergarten Roundup
Please help us to spread the word that Liberty Elementary School's Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled for Thursday, April 13. Children must be five years old by August 1, 2017 to attend. Parents need to call the school office (458-5521) and schedule a time to register between 8:30 - 3:15 on the 13th. Parents need to bring the student, a certified birth certificate (not a hospital record), a record of immunizations, proof of residency, drivers license and custodial papers if applicable. Please enter door #37 on Layman Street across from the Auxiliary Gym. School will be in session for the current KinderKids on this day.
Library
Many students have not been practicing the LifeSkill of responsibility with their library books. As a result, these students have been asked by Mrs. Grissom, our school librarian, to leave their books here at school. It is an unfortunate but necessary request. If you have been receiving notifications about lost or damaged books, then we ask that you refund the library for this amount so that your child may start borrowing again.
Basket Bash Thank You
Thank you to those of you who donated toward our class basket. It is appreciated. Now, mark those calendars for Tuesday, April 11th. A fun night is in store for us.
Beach Day
On Friday, March 24, LES will celebrate our annual Beach Day. Students are invited to dress in beach-type attire. (No swimsuits, please!) Given the chilly weather, you will want to be certain that your child is dressed for the weather for the trip to and from school. Your child may wish to bring along a beach towel for sitting on at our community circle. Students will be participating in fun-filled beach related activities throughout the building that day.
Literacy Night
It was wonderful to see families experiencing an evening of literacy last night. Didn't the older students do a great job with their wax museum projects? Thanks for your support and the message to your child that reading/writing is important.
Pizza Hut Book It
The Pizza Hut Book It program will conclude this month. Your child is receiving his or her final sentence page for the month of March...and for the school year. Thank you to those of you who made this reading a commitment in your home. We do, of course, encourage you to continue reading nightly. There is nothing out there that will contribute more to your child's academic success than reading together at home!
