September 2020
Message from the Principal, Chris Woodward
Hello everyone. I am very happy to be beginning my thirteenth year as the principal of our great school. Though we are starting this year in an online learning model, I am still expecting great things from our students and staff. I have already observed a lot of hard work from a great many people. I appreciate everyone’s patience and dedication as we navigate the new educational territory made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are excited to offer you this newsletter in a fully digital format, which should be a big improvement! You’ll find this newsletter to be full of information, so I hope that everyone will take a little time to check it out—I promise that you’ll learn something from it.
Instead of our typical beginning of the year open house, we recorded a virtual open house and the teachers all had virtual classroom open houses. The virtual open house video is still on our Facebook page and school webpage if you didn’t get a chance to see it.
In addition to our virtual open house, we will have a virtual Title 1 Annual Meeting sometime soon. I will share some data with you, explain what Title 1 is all about, and we will take a look at our School-Wide Plan and Family Engagement Plan. I will also be recruiting parents to join our Title 1 Leadership Team to take a closer look at these plans. Please watch for more information on that.
We have several new staff members this school year. I’d like you all to join me in welcoming them. Please see some introductory notes from them in this newsletter.
Please consider this to be an open invitation to all parents and community members to contact me whenever you have questions. You are welcome to call me at 742-3900 or send me an email at woodward_chris@asdk12.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello families! I am originally from Tennessee, and I have lived in Alaska since 2011. I love books, art, music, gardening, and swimming. I graduated from UAF with a degree in Elementary Education and I am so excited to be in 1st Grade at Mountain View. Even with all the challenges, this year brings, I am so happy to have your wonderful children in my class. It's going to be an amazing year!

iReady Information for Families
Please read!
Students in grades K-12 who are enrolled in ASD at School will take a reading and mathematics diagnostic assessment as part of the first few weeks of school. The diagnostic assessments are designed to provide teachers and parents with information about where a student is ready to learn, including areas of strength and concern.
Reading
iReady - Grades K-10, Grades 11-12 Tier III Courses
Mathematics
iReady - Grades K-8
ALEKS PPL – Grades 9-12
The diagnostic assessments are designed to enable personalized, online instruction with lessons based on individualized learning needs to support your student’s learning. Therefore, students must complete the diagnostic assessments independently. Classroom teachers will be providing information and guidance on how to access and complete the diagnostic assessments.

Hello students and families! Nurse Tammi is missing you!
I’m sorry we can’t all be in the school together yet but I’ll drop in to your ZOOM classes and say hello!
While we are doing school different this fall we still need to remember:
- Drink water!
- Choose water over sugary drinks.
- Get plenty of sleep!! 8-10 hours of sleep for elementary students
- Play outside and get some exercise!!! Fresh air and exercise will help you sleep, also.
I’m so excited for when we all come back to the school building. I want to hear about your summer and how on-line learning is going. Stay healthy and wear your mask when outside of your house!
